2015 is here! I thought it would be fun to look at some notable book/movie pairings that have milestone anniversaries this year!
100 YEARS AGO In 1915, The Clansman was adapted into a silent film directed by D.W. Griffith. While the film boasts as the first 12-reel film in America, it was highly controversial since it was downright racist. The Clansman was again made into a movie in 1982. Carmen was made into three separate films in 1915, the last of which starred Charlie Chaplin to parody the previous films, particularly that which was directed by D.W. Griffith.
90 YEARS AGO Plumes was adapted into a movie entitled The Big Parade; an influential war drama that addressed the human cost of war. In 1992 The Big Parade was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." The Lost World was made into a film of the same name that was the first feature length film in the US to feature stop motion animation as the primary special effect. It was also the first film shown to airline passengers.
80 YEARS AGO Mutiny on the Bounty become a movie of the same name in 1935, and was the top grossing movie of the year. It is currently the only movie to have three Academy Award best actor nominations. The Informer inspired the movie that won the 1935 academy awards for best director , best actor, best writing screenplay, and best music. It was also nominated for production and editing. More notably, however, although Dudley Nichols won best writing screenplay, he turned it down because of union disagreements. It was the first time an Oscar was declined.
70 YEARS AGO Leave Her to Heaven grossed over $5,000,000 for its movie adaptation, making one of the highest grossing films of the 1940’s. The Lost Weekend won both the Academy award for best picture and the Cannes Film festival’s first Grand Prix for its movie adaptation.
60YEARS AGO East of Eden. Of the three films in which James Dean played the male lead, this is the only one to have been released during his lifetime and the only one Dean personally viewed in its entirety. The Blackboard Jungle brought Hollywood into the rock'n'roll era, showcasing Rock Around the Clock, as the first rock song ever used in a Hollywood feature.
