fascinating book that is both documentary, historical, artistic, but mostly engaging and readable. The stories of one extended family prior to, during, and after the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. The book was written in the different voices of family members, as they wrote in their diaries in real time, and as they wrote and told family members after the war, edited in a way that allows us to know each member of the family in his or her own unique voice and story. A hard-to put away book, sometimes exiring, sometimes sad, very intriguing book, shows man and humanity at the unbelievable low, and also at the high points of sacrifice, anodicism, and human love.A book that shows the extent to which the decision to being indefferent and let evil happen around us or stand up and take a stand is a choice. It is highly recommended!
