I think he had doubts that he could find any kind of evidence that she didn't kill George. If he doesn't find the evidence, she would be going to prison. He was probably protecting himself and didn't want to get any closer to her than he already was.
I wondered what he thought would have happened if he did find her. That night was a fantasy for both of them. Her pregnancy, the murder, who each of them really were - that's reality and it's a bitch.
He wasn’t convinced 100 percent she was innocent. Didn’t he sleep with the door locked in case she wanted to stab him in his sleep? That part cracked me up.
Carlton had already put himself way out there on her behalf. He bailed her out and then he married her. If she isn't innocent, his reputation is shot. He also told her he didn't care if she killed him, he just wanted her to tell him the truth.
This guy is complicated! His passion for her scared him witless and Carleton knew she could hurt him only as his sister’s death did. He was protecting himself. Better to live in the fantasy than go down in the reality.
