Kelly Green Hicks (kelly's bookish world) I own several books that are on either Reese's list or Jenna's list. Trying to decide which to read...maybe more than one. A Woman Is No Man by Etaf Rum, Patsy by Nicole Dennis-Benn, The Scent Keeper by Erica Bauermeister, and This is the Story of a Happy Marriage by Ann Patchett. Has anyone read any of these and can recommend?

Kelly Green Hicks (kelly's bookish world) Awesome pick, Jay! I really loved that book!

Jay wrote: "I will be reading Becoming by Michelle Obama. I checked it out from the Collegedale library the other day. It was an Oprah's Book Club pick in late 2018."

Sheri Howard Kelly, I listened to the audio version of "This is the Story of a Happy Marriage" read by the author and I really enjoyed it. I thought some of the essays were better than others, but it's definitely worth a listen (or read). Thanks for all the links! This will make it fun to see what I want to read for July's challenge.

Rebekah Gernhard (bekahgern) I have read A Woman is No Man. It wasn't well written IMO which was disappointing.

Sara Kreps Are there any celebrity book club that aren't the usual selections? I'm tired of the "literary" stuff; it's all starting to blend together to me

message 8: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Green Hicks (kelly's bookish world) Try Emma Watson's book club. That is the only one that I know of that doesn't do contemporary selections. John Willis I am reading "My Dark Vanessa" which was an Oprah Book Club pick for March. After reading "American Dirt" which Oprah picked for January and had some controversy around it, Oprah decided to take "My Dark Vanessa" off of her list when it had some controversy about it stir up. So, I wanted to see what it was all about, even though the controversial issues surrounding it seemed to have gone away.

message 11: by Sheri (new)

Sheri Howard John, keep us posted. "My Dark Vanessa" is on my Want-to-Read list as well, so I'm eager to hear what others think about it.

message 12: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Green Hicks (kelly's bookish world) I have been interested in My Dark Vanessa as well, so I am interested in what you think of it. How did you like American Dirt ?

Kelly Green Hicks (kelly's bookish world) I ended up reading A Woman Is No Man by Etaf Rum. I really enjoy learning about other cultures and this one filled the bill!

message 14: by Rebekah (new)

Rebekah Gernhard (bekahgern) haven't read this one yet, but I chose The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd. it's an older Oprah book club choice and I've had it on my Kindle for several years but never read it.

Kelly Green Hicks (kelly's bookish world) I love Sue Monk Kidd, though wasn't my favorite book by her. Happy reading!

John Willis I enjoyed reading My Dark Vanessa, it is a very dark, awful subject, but I knew that going in. I thought the author did a great job with character development and the dialogue was great. The only thing is I thought it was a little long and it could have ended without dragging it on a little bit at the end. Overall, well worth my time, I am reading Lolita now, which is one of the books the characters reference and seems to be a basis for this book also.

message 17: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Green Hicks (kelly's bookish world) It is on my TBR list. I should try it since you liked it.

Sheri Howard Thanks for the update on My Dark Vanessa...definitely on my TBR list.

Rebekah Gernhard (bekahgern) I finished an Invention of Wings recently and I thought it was just ok. could have been better!

message 20: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Green Hicks (kelly's bookish world) I read this several years ago. It is definitely my least favorite from this author. Have you read The Book of Longings?
