Classic Trash discussion

I'm only at chapter 5, but this looks like it's going to be alot of fun.

When I saw that Agatha Christie had written this book I assumed it was a mystery, but it actually is more within the Spy genre. What a pleasant surprise! I really was in the mood for a good spy novel. And this book has both action and humor, which is something I love. Thanks, Adelaide, for picking this for the group read!

The Tommy and Tuppence books are my favorites of Christie's. They are all a ton of fun.

I just started this today on audio. It's very funny and the narrator is great!

I’m glad you found a great audiobook of this title, Jess. I found it pretty funny just reading it, so I imagine the audiobook is even better.

I've finished this now. It was a funny and charming book and I loved the two main characters but I did find the plot a bit difficult to follow. Did anyone else?

I’m glad you enjoyed the book. You did have to concentrate a bit to understand the plot. I read it it pretty quickly, so I think that helped me keep everything straight.

I love this book and the dramatization with Francesca Annis as Tuppence.

Sometimes modern people have trouble with plots like this, as well as the plots of The 39 Steps and The Riddle of the Sands. I love these books, by the way. There was a time we weren't worried about communists. The real threat was anarchists. Remember how Tommy and Tuppence were horrified at the thought of a General Strike? This means all workers went on strike. This was a real fear in Britain. Also remember it wasn't that long since the Romanovs were murdered. After WW I, many royal families and empires disappeared. Germany, Austria-Hungary, the Ottoman Empire... they were all destroyed.

This is real interesting insight! Someone accused me of being a communist yesterday and I was like “Um...what?” I didn’t even know that was a valid insult. Guess you had to be alive during McCarthyism.

Too many people think communism and socialism are the same thing. And it seems like nowadays if you wear a mask you risk the insult.
