Joni | 626 comments I have had this book on my TBR for quite some time. I finally had some time to read it. I think I need to read Octavia Butler’s original.

Dana is a young black woman, a writer, who lives in California during the 1970’s with her white husband. Dana is unexpectedly transported back in time and across the US to a plantation in Maryland. She had no explanation for this, except to help deal with or take care of a “troubled” white slaveowner, Rufus.

Each time she transports, Rufus is older, Dana is not. On one occasion, she happens to transport with her husband. He had been holding her to keep her from transporting. Each time she transports, the incidents with Rufus get harsher and harsher.

During these transports, Dana experiences and witnesses what it is like to live and be “held” as a slave; how brutal and violent it was. At one point, she personally experienced the beatings and whippings for try to escape as she was accused of doing.

As I stated earlier, I have not read the original version of this book, but I plan to. I thought this graphic novel was very well done. The illustrations really bought this story to life and put it into context.
