BotM winner for our runner-up theme in August is


Defeated, crushed, and driven almost to extinction, the remnants of the human race are trapped on a planet that is constantly attacked by mysterious alien starfighters. Spensa, a teenage girl living among them, longs to be a pilot. When she discovers the wreckage of an ancient ship, she realizes this dream might be possible—assuming she can repair the ship, navigate flight school, and (perhaps most importantly) persuade the strange machine to help her. Because this ship, uniquely, appears to have a soul.



Who is in for this month? I've been meaning to read this one, just have to get out and buy a copy.

I've read this late last year and loved it but will try to watch for comments to discuss!

I've put a hold on a copy from the library but it doesn't look like I'll be getting to it this month unless a bunch of people start reading faster. It's been a long time since I've read any Sanderson but the synopsis sounds intriguing so I'll jump in when I can.

I've also read this book (actually with HeatherH). So maybe I'll reread it (as I've bought the second book recently and planning on reading it).

I've started re-reading the book and it seems even more interesting! I've just read about 260 pages in one sitting.

Reading the second time I still feel how hard it is for Spensa to live among all those people. Every day for her is a challenge. She is brave on her own but she pushes herself even harder to prove everyone she is not a coward.
Such behaviour could lead to either extremely bad or good consequences.

That's awesome! I haven't had a chance to go buy a copy yet but still hoping to start it by the end of the month

I have a copy sitting on my TBR shelf that keeps calling my name but I've been a little intimidated by it ;)

I read this book last December. This book is super good. I loved every single part of this adventure. Also the writing style is very good.

Actually I finished reading the next day I've started :D But got to update the goodreads only today. It was amazing re-read! Though I prefer the first part of the book more.

My thoughts about Sanderson's writing are the same. Perfect as always. And his description of all the tech things is the best. Not too overwhelming and boring, just enough to understand how it works.
I'm still mad about that silly rule 'if you eject, you can't be the pilot anymore'. They are lack of pilots, so why? why the hell there is this rule? Crazy... Are they so freaking afraid of being cowards? But it's not cowardice, it's just common sense!
And oh this final scene! I've enjoyed reading it one more time, so happy for Spensa and her amazing ship. I'm in love with AI in this story. He is so charming!

I started it this morning and it's still way to early to have any impressions so far. I have a feeling that this will be an easy book to read though.

I'm about 23% of the way into the book and so far I'm enjoying it. The MC is smart and resourceful, there is an interesting cast of side characters that can be fleshed out, and there are plot points that can lead to big twists in the future.

Finished this up and I really enjoyed it. The bulk of the book was a good solid read pulling you along and then there is the ending. That was how you end a book and set up the next one.
