Alex is a bruja, like the rest of her family. Bruja's have magical powers which usually manifest when they hit puberty. Alex's powers may be one of the most powerful types that a bruja can have, but she doesn't want it. In an attempt to rid herself of the powers that scare her, Alex unintentionally gets her entire family (including the ghosts of her ancestors) imprisioned in the land of the Gods by an evil being called the Devourer. Now Alex must travel to this land and free her family from the Devourer's labyrinth before they are gone forever.

This was a great start to a series. The magic and mythology that Zoraida Córdova creates is inspired by a variety of religions and cultures from Latin America, the Caribbean, and Africa. She does an excellent job creating a world that was so detailed and rich that I was surprised reading the afterwards that they were made up rather than based on real mythical stories. The characters are interesting and fun with struggles that most teens can relate to. I definitely recommend it if you are looking for a young adult contemporary fantasy series.

Hebah (quietdissident) | 675 comments I loved this book when I read it. Not sure why I haven't picked up the other books in the series yet. Hmmm...
