I vaguely remember a book I would have read in the mid 90s-early 00s. I remember it being around A4 size and paperback. It may have been by Babette Cole, it was definitely a very similar style of illustration. I remember the pages being white with the illustrations standing out and not having any other background. I remember a ghostly pirate ship, it may have been about a family of monsters or ghosts? It definitely had a spooky vibe! It was a picture book not a chapter book.

Florence, can you tell us more about the illustrations - e.g., simple or detailed, realistic or cartoon-like, painted watercolors or bold graphics, bright or dark colors, black & white?
Author/illustrator mentioned - Babette Cole

I feel like maybe pen and ink and watercolour? The main one I remember was this looming dark ghost ship which scared me! I feel like they were more on the cartoony/exaggerated side. The main thing I remember is them contrasting strongly with a white background, so you’d have a character in the middle of all this white.

It’s not scary stories to tell in the dark I’m afraid. I think this was aimed at a younger audience! Not quite so scary!
I found it completely by chance in a charity shop!!!!!!!!It’s spooks by Colin Hawkins!
I mixed it up a bit with his vampires and pirates books as well but it’s the one! Solved!!!!!!
That's great. Glad you found your book, Florence. Thanks for the update. Here's the link - Spooks by Colin Hawkins.
