Author Alice Hoffman's book about the women of the Owens family follows three generations. The oldest aunts have powers and specialize in potions related to matters of love. Sally and Gillian are sisters who went to live with these aunts when they were young. Later they decided they wanted a more normal life and when they are old enough they leave to go their separate ways. Now Sally has two daughters of her own.

Sally and Gillian are opposites and have not seen each other in years when Gillian shows up late one night with a dead man in her car. The sisters must decide what to do next, especially when the ghost of the person is still causing them trouble.

The story is fun if you do not take it very seriously. There are different points of views, misunderstandings, but also sisterly bonds. The aunts are not the only ones who possess magic and love continues to find ways into the women's lives. Descriptions are done well and there are more to characters than are initial shown. I look forward to reading Hoffman's book, The Rules of Magic, that is a prequel to this novel.

I think there are quite a few of us who will be interested in the new book. Maybe we can have a group buddy read! I already put a hold on it with my library.
