The movie: Anatomy of a Murder directed by Otto Preminger starring James Stewart (as the defense attorney) among others is based on the real murder of Maurice "Mike" Chenoweth by US Army lieutenant Coleman Peterson. In the movie, Joseph N. Welch plays Judge Weaver.

What is Joseph N. Welch's real life claim to fame?

He once represented the U.S. Army when it was under investigation by HUAC for un-American activity. Or did he do something more interesting than that once?
