Maja (The Moonlight Reader) (majalovesreading) | 642 comments I think we need a place to discuss our recent bookish endeavours. Ok, so recently went back to school, and it's my first time in secondary school! Then I found out that they had a library, so OBVIOUSLY I went to check it out. I WAS AMAZED. It's so AWESOME in there! There were so many amazing books and DVDs and Mangas! I'm in love, tbh. Guess who has been in there with her friends at every chance they got?

message 2: by Jaye (new)

Jaye Card (jayecard) So, not so recent, but my favourite café is also a bookstore. You can order books there, or buy secondhand. They have some super uncommon stuff there too, and it's all for like 3€ for the resell ones. It's great, you can sit in, order your coffee, have some amazing cake and browse some books. And the drinks there are real good too. I go there as much as my wallet allows it, haha

Maja (The Moonlight Reader) (majalovesreading) | 642 comments That sounds absolutely amazing, now I want something I can't have XD

message 4: by 幽灵 (new)

幽灵 (_youlin) Omg I'm so jealous... why doesn't my country have something that awesome?

message 5: by Lucy Tonks, Shadowhunter - Head of BOTM (new)

Lucy Tonks (the invisible life of a reader) | 2037 comments ok, so in the old center (that's how we call it) in the town that i live, there's this huge bookstore (at least where i live it's considered huge, but i think barnes and nible it's bigger), that it's literally on 4 floors. i love going there, but my parents don't take me often there bc they hate spending time with me in a bookstore.

message 6: by 幽灵 (new)

幽灵 (_youlin) My parents forbid me from reading any kind of books unrelated to school so I have to sneak them secretly or download them secretly online. :(

message 7: by Maja (The Moonlight Reader), The Head Mod :) (new)

Maja (The Moonlight Reader) (majalovesreading) | 642 comments WHAT? That's horrible :( I'm glad my parents let me read whatever I want as long as it's appropriate

message 8: by Lucy Tonks, Shadowhunter - Head of BOTM (new)

Lucy Tonks (the invisible life of a reader) | 2037 comments wait WHAT? may i ask why?

message 9: by 幽灵 (new)

幽灵 (_youlin) Idk why... they just want me to focus on my exams and anything unrelated is considered a distraction. They want me to be the top and they want me to be completely focused. They don't even know I have a gr account

message 10: by Jaye (new)

Jaye Card (jayecard) So I've seen the Folk of the Air books around quite a bit, the series starting with The Cruel Prince, and I was wondering whether I should try it out. I saw some people in this group have read it. Would you recommend it to someone that generally likes Fantasy, but really doesn't enjoy a lot of the common romance tropes?

I mainly have a problem with like...dark edgy love interests, unless they are REALLY pulled off well. Guys who are controlling or creepy are a huge no. I'm also just not a big fan of stuff like "choosing between duty and love" or similar stuff, just doesn't interest me (for deeper reasons but I'm not gonna annoy you with that right now). I'd also generally like to know how much romance there is, so I know what mood I need to be in to read it

Hmm.. I do think you should try it because i feel like it has the enemies to lovers trope but then not in a trope classic kinda way if you get what i mean. In the first two books there is mostly hate and fighting but also sort of attraction. And in the 3th book there is really romance between Cardan and Jude so in that book there is definitly more romance.

I do think as i look at your message that you will enjoy it and should try it. I think it isnt common romance and definitly something different :)

message 12: by Jaye (new)

Jaye Card (jayecard) Thanks for the response! I'll give it some more consideration then :)

Tris |"I'll leave the morrow for the morrow. Today is enough and more."| Prior am i the only one who reads books that my mom tells me not to read? XD

message 15: by Bumble (new)

Bumble Greenbriar (hernameiscrumpet) oh 100%! it’s a teenager thing I think.

message 16: by Lucy Tonks, Shadowhunter - Head of BOTM (new)

Lucy Tonks (the invisible life of a reader) | 2037 comments to be honest that didn't happened to me. my parents don't tell me what to read and what not to read. they but me whatever books i want...

message 17: by Lucy Tonks, Shadowhunter - Head of BOTM (new)

Lucy Tonks (the invisible life of a reader) | 2037 comments buy** not but ops

message 18: by Bumble (new)

Bumble Greenbriar (hernameiscrumpet) occasionally mom will say oh that’s too adult. but yeah mostly not.

message 19: by Jaye (new)

Jaye Card (jayecard) I'm 23 so literally no one can tell me not to read a thing, but my parents never stopped me from reading anything. At one point, my mom got concerned when she actually read the blurb for the books she'd been getting me for Christmas, but I think she always just trusted my sister and me that we knew our own boundaries. In fact, the only book I ever regretted reading was a book I had to read for school. The irony...

I did absolutely read past my bedtime though. Don't tell my mom. (I did tell her already and it's a running joke at this point)

message 20: by Bumble (new)

Bumble Greenbriar (hernameiscrumpet) ack I just realised there are 3 s in the topic name change that now 😪

message 21: by Lucy Tonks, Shadowhunter - Head of BOTM (new)

Lucy Tonks (the invisible life of a reader) | 2037 comments my parents never really set a bedtime for me lol, so i read until when i want to. they used to come into my room and tell me to stop reading and go to bed bc it was late (although, they never actually made me stop reading) before quarantine started, but in the past 8 months they never once told me to stop reading since it was late...

message 22: by paola✨ (new)

paola✨ Same for me actually. I do kinda have a bed time but never actually been stick to it. I can usually stay up late for a book but I myself decide to go to bed. No one forces me to.

message 23: by Jaye (new)

Jaye Card (jayecard) We did have bedtimes for a while, but they were totally reasonable. I don't remember them, only that my parents adjusted them as we got older and they were only for when we needed to get up for school the next morning, I think I never thought they were unfair...just that I wanted to read more anyway, lol (or play with my Nintendo DS). I don't remember when we got rid of them altogether, but at some point all we had was a curfew of when we needed to be home, and my parents readily made exceptions when we didn't have school the next day either.

It might have been better that way anyway, cause now that I'm an adult and I am given free reign on my sleep schedule, it sometimes looks really really bad. I've also fallen into "revenge bedtime procrastination" a few times, and I really don't recommend that experience. Good on you guys that you already have a good grip on your sleep schedules as teenagers and don't need to learn it the hard way like I did "^^
(though I still enjoy staying up late sometimes, but I know better than to let myself drop into absolute sleep schedule free fall)

message 25: by Jaye (new)

Jaye Card (jayecard) You guys ever finish a book and wanna reread it right away?

message 26: by krista ☽✧ (new)

krista ☽✧ (bookishwarriorofhope) | 168 comments Yea definitly ! I have that quite a lot actually if a book is really good

message 27: by Jaye (new)

Jaye Card (jayecard) I hardly ever feel like rereading, but somehow when I enjoyed a book it's like reexperiencing everything even more intensely. I had that feeling a lot with Good Omens, but by then I'd already returned it to its owner cause I'd only borrowed it...

message 28: by Bumble (new)

Bumble Greenbriar (hernameiscrumpet) oh, 100%. I love a lot of books and plus I don’t have a lot of money to buy many new ones.

message 29: by Lucy Tonks, Shadowhunter - Head of BOTM (new)

Lucy Tonks (the invisible life of a reader) | 2037 comments i love rereading books that i love. most recently, right after i finished i wanted to reread solitaire by alice oseman, but so far i wanted to do that with every alice oseman book. like i read heartstopper 5 times this year (just the first volume)

message 30: by krista ☽✧ (new)

krista ☽✧ (bookishwarriorofhope) | 168 comments Also with re-reads it feels like you can appriciate the story even more and everything about it and notice small details and take the story in even more I really love that when it is a book i love. I just finished my re-read of six of a crows for the 3th time and I loved it

message 31: by Lucy Tonks, Shadowhunter - Head of BOTM (new)

Lucy Tonks (the invisible life of a reader) | 2037 comments yes! for example i read illuminae 4 times now and everytime i feel like i see something that i missed the other times, but also everytime i read it, i feel like i love it even more.

message 32: by krista ☽✧ (new)

krista ☽✧ (bookishwarriorofhope) | 168 comments Yeees I also love that triology somuch ! Definitly a triology you can re-read

message 33: by Bumble (new)

Bumble Greenbriar (hernameiscrumpet) it’s also interesting to see how the future events are foreshadowed. for example, I read harry potter (all of the books) 18 times and I noticed loads of neat little clues as to what happened next, which you won’t notice first time around since you don’t know what’s going to happen.

message 34: by krista ☽✧ (new)

yes same with the harry potter books , everytime you see something else thats somuch fun. Also 18 times dman , i thought i was a fan with my 3 times hehe

message 35: by Jaye (new)

Jaye Card (jayecard) I extremely rarely reread or rewatch things, but you guys are totally right. Some books have a great deal of reread value where you suddenly get these OH MY GOD moments of realization. Though I think no book has ever come close to my favourite show, Revolutionary Girl Utena (which is also my profile picture). Since the entire show is wrapped in symbolism and metaphor, it feels like every time I watch it, I understand something new about it or discover a different layer. For example, the first time around I thought it was about abusive relationships mainly, the second time felt like it was decidedly about feminism. It's probably related to whatever was important to me at the time, or whatever theme interested me...but it's fascinating how multi layered a story can be.

message 36: by Bumble (new)

Bumble Greenbriar (hernameiscrumpet) that sounds really cool. what’s the age rating?

message 37: by Jaye (new)

Jaye Card (jayecard) For Utena? I don't actually know, let me check if I can find one. But I will say it's very mature and not for everyone. Definitely has some adult themes.

According to IMDB:
Australia: M Canada:13+ (Quebec, "Legendary Spice" VHS)
Canada: G (Quebec, most volumes)
Japan: PG12 (self-applied)
Singapore: NC-16
United Kingdom: 15
United States: TV-14
United States: Not Rated (suggested 13+, DVD rating)

krista ☽✧ (bookishwarriorofhope) | 168 comments How do you guys feel about villians , like what do you guys think makes a villian a good villian you wanna read about. I am honestly such a sucker for villians and i am very curious to know when you guys think a villian is a good villian

message 39: by fish (new)

fish (haitangs) | 172 comments oooh, I really love villains. For me, I think what makes a good villain a GOOD villain is that it can make me hate them so much but at the same time can make me empathize with them.

aah yes same thats a good one , i also always love that. like i love the ifne line between hating and kinda loving and emphatize with a charracter or in this case a villian. Buut i am a sucker for morally grey so i also love a villian who you question all the time is he/she really a villian tho so more the morally grey side of the villian. And i love a good backstory with what makes the villian the villian like what happend.

What are some of your favorite villian/morally grey charracters? + wich do you enjoy more then a real evil Villian or like amorally grey kinda villian/charracter?

Kaz is such a good morally grey charracter yesss. He definitly has that okay what you are doing is so wrong i should hate you but also see that broken part of you and like you are actually underneath it all kinda a little cinnamon roll. He is such a fine line between good and bad

message 43: by Bumble (new)

Bumble Greenbriar (hernameiscrumpet) I think villains have to be unique. voldemort, for example, is very memorable. they also have to want something. common ones are immortality, money, beauty, power, dignity - the usual.
