Anne Tyler’s books sometimes delight me and other times disappoint. I’m afraid I found this one in the latter category. A 40-year-old single man who seems likely to stay that way struggles to connect with his girlfriend and extended family. For such a short book, Tyler does manage to pack in quite a bit of character development but I’m afraid their mundane lives were simply dull this time.

That's too bad. At least it wasn't a long one. I really prefer her quirky characters. I felt like I lived with the family in A Spool of Blue Thread for a year. Then I discovered a very similar character (as the son) when I read Gilead.
I have also enjoyed Ann Tyler's books through the years. I liked A Spool of Blue Thread too. I found her latest book, "Redhead... " , to be boring and dull. I DNF it. How can it be a candidate for the Booker award?
