I am SUPER excited to read Empire of Wild by Cherie Dimaline- I've got it on hold already, with my hold suspended until the end of October, so I can read it for Native American History Month (November). In prepping for that, I had started a list of authors, and I might as well post the list here, too (my list is exclusive to the Americas):
a partial list of Native authors:
Paula Gunn Allen
Tacey M. Atsitty
Joseph Boyden
Natalie Diaz
Cherie Dimaline *
Debra Magpie Earling
Louise Erdrich *
Eric Gansworth
Joy Harjo
Linda Hogan
Stephen Graham Jones *
Thomas King
Layli Long Soldier
Terese Marie Mailhot
N. Scott Momaday
Tommy Orange
Susan Power
Rebecca Roanhorse
Eden Robinson
Leslie Marmon Silko
Richard Wagamese
* Three of my FAVORITE authors. Series, I can't get enough from SGJ and I'm SO glad his recent book (The Only Good Indians) is getting a lot of press, perhaps this is finally his moment.

I just finished Winter Counts this week which was excellent.
I also have The Yield and Crooked Hallelujah on my TBR.

I had not heard of Winter Counts but when I saw you mention it in the check-in, I immediately went to look it up and it looks fantastic, right up my alley (AND my library has a copy! with six holds on it so I'll have a little wait). I look forward to it :-)

Moon of the Crusted Snow by Waubgeshig Rice is really interesting too. I also have Split Tooth by Tanya Tagaq waiting to be read as well.
I bought The Only Good Indians earlier this year so this will be a good push for me to pick it up. He also has a Tor novella out now if people are looking for something short, Night of the Mannequins.

Thanks for this amazing list!
Lilith wrote: "Winter Counts is excellent. I received an ARC and recommend it highly."I also enjoyed Winter Counts! I'm not big on crime novels, but loved the Indigenous aspects of this one and the story had me engaged during every minute of the audio version.
Thanks for providing the great list above!
Dee wrote: "Gods of Jade and Shadow"Silvia Moreno-Garcia is not actually Indigenous. While she is Mexican, she is not a member of an Indigenous tribe such as K'iche Maya or P'uhrepecha, for example.
This Wound Is a World by Billy-Ray Belcourt. He gets to the heart of the queer indigeneity and decolonization in such an evocative way. Highly recommend!
I suggest Elatsoe by Darcie Little Badger. It is an amazing story and I would recommend it even to people who tend not to read YA. I love the family and friendships shown. It has a ghost dog and a fun play on the vampire myth in one scene.
Night of the Mannequins I read this just before Halloween figuring it would be a spooky read, fell a bit flat for me. But it is by an Indigenous author and it was pretty short.
