this book appears to be about the 7th most popular of this author and a goodreads rating shows 3.81. ... how are books chosen to read?

They're chosen via member nominations which start on the first of every month. November nominations are going on now:

Terry I nominated this book because I like this author. It is one I have not read. I do not look at ratings. I look at descriptions. If it sounds like something I would enjoy I read a book. I hope you join us for the discussion. Le Carre has never disappointed me. He writes atmospheric twisty novels.
Thanks Renee and Nancy for the explanation .. Renee I’m all for trying new authors .. so sounds good to me also :)

I am loving it Joan . It has been a while since I read him. Please join us when you can on the discussion thread
An excellent book (I gave it 4 stars, unusually generous for me) which also translated well to the small screen. Happy to recommend to anyone who feels Smiley and Co might be a bit too British and old-fashioned for them.
I got about 10% in on this book and felt I just didnt enjoy his choice of writing style. An example of the word ‘red’ by types of authors:
Common:
Crimson,amber,scarlet,ruby
Enjoy authors that may use:
Blistering,bloody,feverish
This author:
Merlot, Bolshevik, sanguine
I am about 160 pages in (of 425) and I am finding it very slow reading. I don't know if it is me or the book. I have read the George Smiley books and The Perfect spy, so I know I like Le Carre's writing. Maybe it will pick up for me.
I actually enjoyed the use of language in the book. I felt it created an atmosphere, Word like Merlot helped to make the setting richer. Sorry to hear you are struggling Tracy. I did enjoy the story.
I finished this book last night, it took me a month to finish. I really liked some parts, and ripped through those, and others sections were , to me anyway, a real slog to get through. I thought it was worthwhile to read overall, but don’t think I will be rushing out to read more LeCarre anytime soon.
I thought the book was a 100 pages to long. I recently watched the mini series on Amazon prime and I liked the series better than the book.
