Welcome to the Horrid Buddy Read Discussion thread! This thread officially opens on October 23rd and anyone can join at any time. Please keep in mind that spoilers are allowed in this thread but only up to the group's current reading place. Do not spoil the book if you've read further than the group. Any extra days can be used to catch up!

Each day we will be reading by chapters or page numbers. Page numbers are an approximation based on the hardcover or paperback that is the default on Goodreads. The suggested Buddy Read discussion schedule is as follows:

So I'm way ahead of our schedule. It's a really quick read so far. This book is so creepy but I'm enjoying it! I like how the "chapters" are divided in a unique way. Having each section be a part of the poem that was first introduced in the book.

I just read up to page 233 and I was surprised by the twist at the end of that chapter! (view spoiler)[ She has a family member she doesn't know about!! I'm wondering if she is a ghost since someone is leaving messages to Jane. But at the same time, I wonder if all of this is just hallucinations. Many times she would see/hear things, but not one around her would notice... And I really want to know why everyone in the city is afraid of that house. And why her mother is so secretive. Basically, I need answers!! (hide spoiler)]

I think I'll be able to finish this by tomorrow!

I just finished this book and I'm surprised by how it ended. (view spoiler)[ I don't know why I'm surprised a horror novel didn't end well?? I should've anticipated that there wouldn't be a happy ending. Although we got some answers in the last part of the book, I still have questions! Was all of that real or just her imagination? Did her sister actually kill Melanie or was it actually Jane (they mentioned she found dirt in her fingers, so maybe Jane doesn't remember what she did)? As far as I can understand, Jane's sister is behind all the spooky stuff that's going around at North Manor. And she ends up convincing Jane to not interfere with her revenge plan. (hide spoiler)]

I thought it was a good and quick read! There was a lot of creepy parts in it so I enjoyed that! I just wished the ending didn't leave me with more questions. Also, this book really focuses on how the characters handled their grief. It was sad reading those scenes. (view spoiler)[ Jane eating papers from her book as a coping mechanism wasn't what I expected when I first read it. And that fact that eating non-food items is a genetic thing in her family was a surprise. (hide spoiler)]

Thanks for buddy reading with me, May! So I started reading and then paused because I didn't know where/when we would be with our timeline, but it definitely is a quick and easy read. I am probably about 60% through at this point.

I have really been in a spooky house mood this year and this book has been filling that for me! Where I'm at now, I don't fully know if (view spoiler)[ Jane and her mom are in a haunted house being spooked by family ghosts, or a vagrant stalking their big, new house. (hide spoiler)] I think what you said about characters handling their grief was spot-on as well. And anger as well. Plus its not just Jane but secondary characters as well.
