I read this book on september so I'll be reading all your comments.

I hope you all enjoy it, it's a great book, in spite of the difficult topics it talks about in some parts. The Trueba Del Valle familly is an interesnting one and you really want to know more about its members.
The writing style is beautiful, at least in spanish hahah, I don't know about the translation, but considering that it is a classic, I expect for the translations to be very good.

It talks about really tough parts of chilean history. Being chilean, it hit me really hard because we deal with the consequences of the Military Coup and Pinochet's dictatorship till today.
Also we just voted to change the Political Contitution forced on us during this period, it feels like we're finally getting through that part of our history. It was super appropiate for me to read it during this time in Chile.

I highly enjoyed reading this book. Having read quite a few works that included magic realism, it was just as fantastic in that respect! The story gave me a great insight into Chilean history, which is something I was not (as a European) familiar with at all. I wonder how much of the story is based on real-life events and plan to learn more about that.
It fascinated me how often rape/violence against women came up & how the female characters dealt with it. I mean, I know rape happened at any time, and probably in past times even more often than today, but reading about this in great detail has made a lasting impression.
It was also an interesting take of the author to make the reader aware of Esteban's thoughts while he was raping the young girl at the beginning - Esteban reflects his behavior, considers it unreasonable, and still does nothing to change it. I don't really know what to think of that.
Personally, I loved the last chapter: the way Clara's motives for keeping a journal came to light; how Alba put everything into perspective.

ص12, " النساء ما لم يقصرن خراطاتهن وشعورهن وما لم يتخلصن من تنانيرهن لن يعينهن شيئاً أن يسمح لهن بدراسة الطب أو استعمال حق الانتخاب, لأنهن لن تكون لهن أبداً الشجاعة في أن يفعل مع ذلك إن لم تكن تحس بأن لديها الجرأة بأن تكون من أوليات من يتخلين عن المودة."أحب هذه الجملة لأنها تعبر عن تلك السلوكيات والأفعال التي بتغييرها تكون حافزاً بدورها لتغيير طريقة التفكير...

ص51  " كانت حركاتها نزقة رعناء ولها طبع أخيها الرديء  نفسه لكن الحياة و وضعها كامرأة, أكرهها على أن تسيطر على نفسها وتكظم غيظها"إن عدم قدرتها على التعبير عن غضبها, هو من أبسط الأشياء التي حرمت منها لأنها امرأة, وما لم يستطع الإنسان بشكل عام أن يمتلك حرية التعبير عن نفسه بحرية فسيبقى سجين مشاعره نفسها, لذلك استطاعت الكاتبة أن ترينا أهمية هذا الجانب.

ص 54 " قالت وقد امتلأت مرارة : اشتهيت لو ولدت رجلاً أنا أيضاً كي أرحل, اكتفى بأن قال : وأنا ما كنت أحب أن أولد امرأةإن عدم قدرة الإنسان للمميزات التي يمنحها له كونه أحد الجنسين, تجعله يعتبر هذا الأمر عائقاُ او حتى كشماعة يتم تعليق أسباب التصرفات عليها, التي كان من الممكن أن نتصرفها ذاتها لو كان لدينا حرية الاختيار بنظرنا, وما دام الانسان يحتقر نفسه فلن يجد من حوله طريقة لينظروا له بغير ما ينظر لنفسه...

ص61 " وهكذا لا أستطيع قبول أن تأتي حفيدتي كي تلقي علي حكايات عن كفاح الطبقات, تنام لها واقفاً, وإن كنا نمسك بالوقائع فإن هؤلاء الفلاحين المساكين أشد بؤساً اليوم مما كانوا عليه من خمسين عاماً كنت مثل أب لهم, لقد نسف الاصلاح الزراعي كل شيء."لقد استطاعت الكاتبة على طول القصة إحاطة الصراع الطبقي بين المالكين والفلاحين بروعة, واستطاعت إظهار الدور الذي لعبه المالكون, وبرأيي أن هذه المرحلة هي مرحلة مهمة في سلم التطور ولكنها ليست النهائية.

...تطور شخصية استيبان عندما أدرك أنه لارقيب له ويستطيع فعل مايشاء بدأت نزواته في محاولة لكظم غيظه ولكن تحول لإدمان,  ونستطيع أن نلحظ التغيرات التي تطرأ على تصرفاته بحضور زوجته في البداية أو حفيدته, وأن سلخه عن حضور الأنثى عاطفياً من حوله هو ماجعله يسرف في تصرفاته, إن أكبر المشاكل تنتج عن سلخ أحد الجنسين عن الآخر أو تهميش وجوده..

....يمثل العجوز بيدرو غارسيا بالنسبة لي, الثوريين الذين اكتفوا بالسكوت, لأن الزمن لم يعد زمانهم, ولأنهم لا يعلمون بالضبط إن كان نتيجة تمردهم ستكافأ التضحيات التي ستقدم, فمن السهل على الانسان أن يضحي بنفسه ولكن من الصعب عليهم التضحية بغيرهم.ويمثل أيضاً العادات و تعاليم الحضارات السابقة التي تحتاج فقط إلى من يلتف حولها حتى تسهم في تطور المستقبل..

....لقد كان الخطف أماماً لتخبرنا الكاتبة بما سيحدث وتتركنا معلقين بآثار تلك الجملة مئات الصفحات, وكانت موفقة فيها كلها, لكن أصبحت أكثر من اللازم عندما ذكرت أن ميجيل سيشهد ولادة ألبا...

...تطور شخصية كلارا عندما فقدت كل من يعتني بها فكانت بكل الدلال الذي هي فيه نتيجة عدم حاجتها لأن تستخدم قوتها, وليس ضعفاً فيها.وهذا مايحدث في أغلب المجتمعات, التي تقوم بحماية مبالغ فيها للمرأة بحجة ضعفها , فإن تلك الحماية هي بالضبط مايجعلها غير قادرة على اكتساب القوة, وحتى إن اكتسبتها لن تستطيع تطبيقها أو حتى ايجاد الفرصة لذلك....

..بالنسبة لي كان الشرطي ايستابيان هو شكل من أشكال الديّن, لقد قامت الكاتبة بوصفه على أنه حلقة, كان هو ديننا تجاه العدل الذي عندما سيأخذ قصاصه لن يفرق بين أي أحد....

..لقد كانت تطورات الأحداث السياسية والاقتصادية التي تحدث في نهاية الرواية مشابهة لما يحدث في بلادي هذه الأيام, ولم أستطع إلا أن أؤسر بهذه الرواية.

I haven't finished the book yet, but so far I'm really enjoying it. I'm brasilian and I think it's so nice that the chosen book was written by a Latin American woman, especially considering that it's a type of literature with which most of European and North American readers are not very familiar with

I loved this book and I was so happy that we read a Magical Realism book for this group. It’s such a staple genre in Latin America and it’s so nice to introduce this genre to many people who, as Laura said, are not usually exposed to this style of writing.

it's my first time turning toward chilean history, I'm starting to get interested in these topics.

I really enjoyed this read. I joked with a few people who asked what it was about in the early chapters that I had no idea about 100 pages in but like many books, once the plot picked up I couldn’t put it down.

There are a lot of painful parts in this story. Grief and suffering and love lost, but while there are a lot of reoccurring themes, the ties among a family, both magical and not, hold the strongest.

I appreciated how powerful and strong the women in this story were. Given the time frame, it’s nice to see women not only demonstrate their value as members on a family but also their value as participants in a revolution.

Ultimately, I didn’t think I was going to enjoy this story as much as I did. I’m interested in reading Allende’s other books as well given how well I responded to her writing style. Looking forward to the next pick!

I would love to explore this more with you or other Chilean OSS members.

I had no real understanding of this period of history. And I have to add I was getting goosebumps over how similar some of these issues came to be in the last couple of weeks. I kept reading more to see how it turned out.

Allende is of course, related to Salvador Allende who was the socialist leaning President who served before Pinochet's dictatorship. This was love letter to Chile on a deeply profound level that I did not realize before.
