Ashi wrote: "Hi Alex! What are you currently reading right now?"I'm buddy reading An Ember in the Ashes with Amelie, and I'm just kinda flitting around waiting for How The King of Elfhame Learned to Hate Stories to come out XD. I'm also thinking about reading From Blood and Ash, but idk if I should wait until Christmas.
Srujan wrote: "Tomorrow I am going to complete The Elite and The One!"Ooh fun! I don't actually like America much, but I did this the concept of those books was really cool and I would like to have seen more selections- It's just a fun concept with lots of possibilities.
a smol rant ( DID YOU MEAN: Half of Alex's Ruin and Rising review): ok, so I am not a fan of the "we gave up our power and now live happily ever after bc we don't need power we just need love" ending. (Red Queen, Shadow&Bone, even TOG, to an extent) It's so boring and seems to offset the progress of the whole story? Like, we bled and fought for and with this power, and now you just think it's cool to give it up and go back to where and what we were at the beginning- nothing? It's not a satisfying end to a character arc, and it leaves no room for further progress or development- instead, it totally kills character development. You were here at the beginning of the story? You had your adventure and saved the world? Cool, now that's done so let's go back to doing what we were before. idrk, that's just my opinion. (doesn't really apply to tog, but r&r... I'm looking at you, alina starkov)

YOU WANNA TALK ABOUT FUN..."
*chanting* WRITE! WRITE! WRITE! (actual thing: write a scene, perhaps in the middle of the book, but just a thing that you desperately want to write)
Ayla ~when raindrops fell~ wrote: "It's not that I'm having trouble writing, it's because I just barely have any time XD"ah well- that's a whole other problem

Yeah, it's annoying, too.
idk how you WRITE instalove? like, it's so much fun to write the angsting and the woe-is-me and the unrequited-love-oh-no stages and (for me, at least) it gets boring once they finally end up together? give me "i saved your life and idek why" or "DON'T DIE I HAVEN'T KISSED YOU YET". instalove is not only boring to read, but boring to write as well.
alex.the.bookish wrote: "FOR THOSE WHO CARE: ahh I hit 10,000 words in NaNo I'm so happy that I caught up-"
Great!!!

Yes, instalove is too boring.
Yes, instalove is too boring.
Ashi wrote: "Right! Instalove doesn't even make sense half the time. Slow burn is better. Or friends to lovers"or, my favorite trope, ENEMIES TO LOVERS IS THE BEST-
Well...I actually don't like enemies to lovers. I'm fine if the characters genuinely don't like each other because of their personalities, but I hate when the guy is super abusive to the girl, and then puts it off to some tragic backstory or whatever *looking at Rowan and Cardan*. But I get the general appeal of it...
Ashi wrote: "Well...I actually don't like enemies to lovers. I'm fine if the characters genuinely don't like each other because of their personalities, but I hate when the guy is super abusive to the girl, and ..."I respect your opinion, but I beg to differ on Cardan's story. Cardan was a toxic bully for the first 1 and a half books, but Jude was also fairly toxic- not as bad as him, but still. This doesn't excuse either of their behaviors, and Jurdan was a VERY toxic relationship in the first book. However, the important thing about this relationship is that Cardan- and Jude- CHANGED. TWK especially is a story about change and growth, and I think it's really important to note this. He actually has a great quote that sums it up well- “Why am I the way I am?” His tone makes it clear he’s proposing something I might suggest he ask, not really wondering about it. “There are no real answers, Jude. Why was I cruel to Folk? Why was I awful to you? Because I could be. Because I liked it. Because, for a moment, when I was at my worst, I felt powerful, and most of the time, I felt powerless, despite being a prince and the son of the High King of Faerie.” He admits that he was awful and cruel, and he admits this because he wants to CHANGE. While Jurdan starts out toxic, the main point of the relationship is that they improve and learn to love each other in the journey they take over the three books. As for Rowan and Aelin? I don't consider that enemies-to-lovers, not really. idk why, but it doesn't sit like that in my brain.
Hmm you make a very compelling point on Jude also being toxic. I guess the whole point of the book was for them to change, but idk, for me the fact that they are enemies, and then they get together is just weird. But I'll definitely keep in mind Cardan's character arc.
Ashi wrote: "Hmm you make a very compelling point on Jude also being toxic. Out of idle curiosity- what are some of your favorite relationships, then?
alex.the.bookish wrote: "Srujan wrote: "I don't like enemies to lover much."
That's fine- if I may ask, why not?"
Haha. I actually don't believe in it. I mean how is it possible that first hate someone and then suddenly start loving them.
Maybe it is possible :)

Hmm, interesting. I like to think of it as hating the IDEA of each other instead of their actual personalities. Then, when one of the characters (accidentally) opens up and they get to know each other, they actually like each other. Most of the time I feel like the "enemies" part is because they're either hiding their true selves, or they don't know each other that well.
