Kris - I think they where European but not sure. Pretty sure the kids were pretty ordinary, but all from the same school class.

I notice your profile says you're in Sweden. Did you read this book in English? Do you remember what European country the kids might have been from?

Worldcat shows several of her juvenile titles were translated to Swedish.

"Computer engineer Lou Christopher's life falls apart when the World Government decrees that the project he is working on is too dangerous to continue. Thus, he and thousands of other scientists and their families are sentenced to permanent exile from Earth on a space station. But Lou and several others decide to escape--by converting the space station into a starship. "

The Galahad series by Dom Testa is probably too late, starting in 2004.

Earth is getting uninhabitable due to global warming. The global powers have constructed huge starships which are powered by "smaall suns", and a world war is getting near. A couple of scientist takes a group of children aboard a starship, steals it and narrowly escape Earth. They travel in hypersleep close to the speed of light to a habitable planet.
The protagonist, one of the children, wakes up to find the ship empty and starts to explore the new planet with the aid of the ship AI. They discover sentient aliens, and I seem to remember that they have no fear of death whatsoever.
