Goodreads is a great place to chat and make friends. When another Goodreads member is your friend, you can invite each other to public groups, invite each other to vote on polls, view each other's profiles, and get noticifation updates on what they're doing.
Some people tend to accept everybody that sends them a friend request. That can be fine, but I personally prefer to be able to recognize who's on my friends list. It's hard enough when everybody changes their name every month! You can set up a challenge question that people have to answer before they can continue processing the friend request. If you want to limmit the requests you get, set up a challenge answer that they must answer correctly. Otherwise, the system just "suggests" that they answer it. A challenge question can be a good way to find out something about other people before you friend them, or find out if they really know you (where they know you from or why they want to be your friend).
To delete a friend or choose top friends, go to the friends page at the top and enter edit friends mode by clicking on the "edit friends" button to the right of the display settings bar. In "edit friends" mode, you have the option to make them a "top friend" by chacking the box, or deleting them as a friend by clicking the gray "x" located in the top right corner or their display row. If a member is bothering you, you can block them by clicking on he gray link in the bottom left of their profile that says "block this member". Blocking a member will prevent them from sending you messages or viewing you profile, and the content of their posts is automatically replaces with a message that says "You have blocked this member. To view this message, click here (link)." If they are on your friends list you will have to remove them before you can block them.
Profiles can be set to be viewed by anyone, just Goodreads members, or just friends. When only friends can view your profile, it's considered private. Goodreads automatically gives you a private profile if you enter an age that indictes that you're under 18. If you don't enter any age, it leaves it public.
You can adjust several display settings under your "my account" page (accesible by mousing over the "hi username" link in the top right). You can set your email to display between friends and no one; your messaging bewteen anyone and friends; and your age and birthday between combinations of Goodreads members, friends, and no one. If your profile is private, the only setting that's going to matter to people that aren't your friends is the private messaging availability because anybody that's not your friend will only see your profile picture, a message that the profile is private, a button to friend request them, and, if the user has it enabled, a link to send them a private message.
You can add more than picture to your profile, however you must select only one top be your profile picture. To change your profile picture, to to "my account", select browse, navigate to the picture and select it, and upload/open it. To add more pictures, go to "my account", choose "more pictures", and select "add more photos" (all of these links should be found in the upper right of the page). Your friends can comment on any of your pictures except for your profile picture.
