Jason Oliver | 3176 comments Matthew McConaughey is a poet, a romantic, a fantastic writer, and a philosopher.

Per McConaughey's words, this is not a memoir in the traditional sense. This is not a self help book. This is more of his philosophy of life. Greenlights. Life is full of Greenlights. Sometimes Greenlights are disguised as Yellowlights and Redlights, but we should focus on the Greenlights. The ones we were lucky to catch, to be at the right time and place, and those Greenlights we make for ourselves.

He uses stories of his life, poems, prayers, prescriptions and bumper stickers, to help explain the stories of his life, ending them always on a good note. "Greenlight"

I do feel the book lost its poetic touch towards the end. Maybe I became too familiar with his style or maybe he lost steam. I listened to the audiobook, read by McConaughey. It felt like he was doing a screen test and the story came to life.

I do not believe in writing in books, but you do believe in it, read this with a highlighter.

Joi (missjoious) | 3970 comments So glad to see a good review! I've listened to a couple podcasts/interviews of McConaughey doing his press for this book- some of this stories are great, and I got really interested in the book. I thought specifically his transition from rom coms to be taken more seriously was really interesting.

One friend told me the highlights are in the interviews, and the book is just similar/the same stuff with more filler, so I'm hesitant now to read it.

Jason Oliver | 3176 comments I have not seen any interviews or read any other reviews. I learned of this book twice. Once in a book store on vacation, and then a headline about McConaughey admits to being sexually abused as a teenager.

I decided to read this because, though I don't know much about McConaughey, he is a wonderful actor (love his dramatic roles) and he is very vonfodent in who he is. He was at a baseball game wearing a fanny pack one time. They interviewed him and asked about the fanny pack. He said its practical. They mentioned about him being Matthew McConaughey and being able to pull off any look. He had an I don't care how it looks attitude and just said "I like it".

The highlights to me was learning about his upbringing, his time as a foreign exchange student in Australia, his change to a dramatic actor, seeing him as talented beyond the screen, and his real desire to find truth in life.

I really liked it. I think his writing in the beginning carried me through some parts I was disinterested in. I liked the writing in the beginning more but not sure if it was because it exceeded expectations and I became accustomed to it as I went on, or if the writing had more life, was more poetic and romantic.
