I hope to read both The Jane Austen Project by Kathleen A. Flynn and The Jane Austen Society by Natalie Jenner. Maybe some Shakespeare fanfic would be good.

I'm not familiar with most of your choices, I look forward to reading any reviews you may write.

message 5: by Cynda (new)

Cynda | 5290 comments Thank Bob.

Ila | 710 comments OMG you're actually reading Bazan! She's awesome and I daresay she writes some seriously powerful Gothic prose.
I gave up on Ellis Peters after the 2nd book but I remember both of them were good.

Cynda | 5290 comments Hi Ila. Perhaps it was you who I saw read House of Ulloa, anyway someone at Catching Up, and immediately knew I would have to read it. I am making opportunity this year. I am excited 🤓

siriusedward (elenaraphael) | 2005 comments Love Ellis peters..and Brother Cadfael ...enjoy the books...

message 9: by Cynda (new)

Cynda | 5290 comments Thanks siriusedward. I enjoyed the television series of a few or all of the Cadfael books. I am fairly confident I will enjoy reading the books, learning more critical thinking skills. Curious minds want to know.

Karen | 26 comments The House of Ulloa is an amazing book, something of a hidden gem in English speaking countries anyway. I read Mexican Gothic last year and really enjoyed it. I liked but did not love the Cadfael books and stopped after the first three, but I love the TV show. I am currently in Purgatory with Dante myself...

Hope you have a great year.

message 11: by Cynda (new)

Cynda | 5290 comments Thanks for stopping by Karen. As for Purgatory, I will follow in after you. If you are still there, we will help each other through.

Sue K H (sky_bluez) | 3694 comments Good luck with your challenge Cynda. Don Quixote is an all time favorite and The Divine Comedy was another 5 star one for me. I'm not familiar with the rest of yours and look forward to seeing which were your favorites.

message 13: by Cynda (last edited May 28, 2021 09:09PM) (new)

Cynda | 5290 comments Thanks Sue :)

I am currently reading
Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra
and
Quixote: The Novel and the World by Ilan Stavans

Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra Quixote The Novel and the World by Ilan Stavans

I had planned on reading just Part 1 of Don Quixote, but I might just continue on to Part 2 while the momentum has been established. . . .

message 14: by Cynda (new)

Cynda | 5290 comments I reread Part One of Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra
Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra . I plan to reread Part Two in 2022.

my review

Companion Book
Quixote: The Novel and the World
Quixote The Novel and the World by Ilan Stavans
by Ilan Stavans
my review

In some ways the novel-within-the-novel story reminded me of The Decameron by Giovanni Boccaccio. But the novel-length story was more complex and satisfying.

Sue K H (sky_bluez) | 3694 comments Congratulations on your first check off on this challenge. I'm glad you liked part I of Don Quixote. Many people seem to not like part II as well, but I loved part II also.

message 16: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen | 5516 comments Interesting reviews, Cynda! Sounds like you got a lot out of your re-read. Like Sue, I loved both parts of DQ, but would love to re-read it someday.

message 17: by Cynda (last edited Jun 08, 2021 06:06PM) (new)

Cynda | 5290 comments Hi Sue and Kathleen! I read Part Two only once or twice way back in the 80s. I look forward to finding out what difference a few decades make ;-) While I enjoyed it then, I think I will have a better understanding now. Hope so!

Congratulations, Cynda. I also loved DQ, but it has been ages since I read it. One of those "have to get to this again" books.

Don Quixote a bucket list book that has been on my list for years. Just can't seem to get motivated to try, maybe someday?

message 20: by Cynda (new)

Cynda | 5290 comments Thanks Sara and Bob. I had to motivate myself too. I hope you each enjoy a read/reread.
