I’m planning to listen to Survivor Song by Paul Tremblay in January for a book club. Book clubs have been what has pushed those books in my TBR over the finish line.
I think I’m going with Jane harpers the survivors ... not necessarily horror but I know she’s been mentioned on the podcast.
so here's the thing about The Only Good Indians....I have picked it up twice and cannot get through it. also read some of Night of the mannequins and didn't like it at all. I think SGJ and I are simply not meant to be
SGJ is definitely one of those "not for everyone authors". I enjoyed Mongrels but it took me a long time to get into, and I absolutely loved The Only Good Indians, but his short stories have been really hit or miss for me. Anyone have suggestions for an author who does really good ghost/haunted house stories?

(I left out Mexican Gothic because I see you've already read it.)
I read one I've had on my list for awhile, Gateways to Abomination: Collected Short Fiction by Matthew M. Bartlett. Demonic radio station, generations of dark sorcery and atrocities in a rural town, what's not to like here? I will definitely be checking back in with WXXT.
I just finished The Book of X, by by Sarah Rose Etter. I'd say it's horror-adjacent, with some weird imagery and definite gross parts, but not scary at all. I listened to the audiobook, and I think I would have liked it better if I'd read it. It was a bit too slow, poetic and sad to be a satisfying audiobook for me, but I will 100% check out other books by this author,
I read The Good House by Tananarive Due for this one. This was my first book by this author and based on suggestions on the podcast, I also bought Ghost Summer Stories. Many of the books I’ll be reading for this challenge are by new-to-me authors so I’m excited about that!
I just finished The Dead House by Billy O'Callaghan. At times part of me wished there were MOAR SCAREZ!!! but it was a wonderful ghost story and I enjoyed the characters and loved the ending. I think I've decided that ghost stories/haunted house stories are my favorite horror subgenre. Maybe it's because The Shining is the first grown up horror novel I ever read :)
