Here we can discuss the first 5 chapters, which everyone can read at their own speed. We're starting on the 11th! There will be new sections for each group of 5 chapters, and everyone can move through the chapters at whatever pace they want.

The only rule is to only comment about events that have happened in whatever section you're posting in (so in the chapter 6-10 section, you can say anything about chapters 1-10, but no spoilers for chapter 11). Just to make sure everyone knows :D

There WILL be spoilers if you go to a section you haven't read yet.

Have fun everyone!!! Happy reading! :)

BookLover (myrauh) I am about half-way through chapter five and I can already say that I am starting to like it!

message 14: by Lupe (last edited Jan 11, 2021 02:02PM) (new)

Lupe (b00kw0rm1) Hey everyone! So I think the first 5 chapters did a nice job of setting the story up. However I was a bit confused on the twins' age, are they 7 when Madoc kills their parents? Does this make them 17 presently?

Also why did their Mom try to run? I feel like a good mother would have stayed for the sake and safety of her children, I mean she didn't know what would happen to the twins?? Or maybe she was aware that Madoc would do the right thing and keep them idk. The mom just comes off as selfish to me, how did y'all feel about her?

Also... I like Madoc. I know I know he did a horrible thing but he's also honorable, and he seems kind in the way Jude describes her upbringing with him. The part where she said he would let her sit on his knee and eat from his plate really made him seem nice. He's never treated them like burdens or held any resentment despite the fact that their existence is the physical proof of his first Wife's infidelity and betrayal.

Lastly, Cardan and his friends are a bunch of jerks, however Locke seems a bit interesting, I look forward to reading more about him.

((sorry if this is a lot lol))

message 15: by Beenish (new)

Beenish (beenishamir) hey, don't be sorry. I like such long and detailed book talks. and tbh, I remember that why the mom did what she did is clarified later on in the book but no, I didn't think it was her mom's fault. I know how faeries are with humans and I kind of thought "Thank God! she didn't stay."

I too like Madoc. I mean he took his revenge or whatever and yet he took the responsibility of not only his daughter but his wife's daughter's too

oh god! I liked Locke but I'm so madly in love with Cardan .. but yes. he's definitely very very much of an a**hole XD

message 16: by BookLover (new)

BookLover (myrauh) It isn't! I felt the same way. I hated how Cardan treats everybody and it just wanted to make me punch him in the face. But I love how the book is starting out so far. I don't know their ages either. I would say that they are in their teen years sine Jude said that she has been there for ten years, and she seems very sophisticated.

message 17: by Beenish (new)

Beenish (beenishamir) oh, I love Jude very much!

ahhhhhh i love this book so far!! yes, i'm only on chapter six. but i really enjoy reading it.

so far, i like Jude a lot, and like hearing the story through her perspective. i can't wait until she has more scenes with Cardan, though! those have been my favorite. and speaking of him... yeah he's a jerk and i hate how mean he is to Jude and her sister. but he's honestly my favorite character so far XDDD

@BookLover, i really like faerie worlds and haven't read many books with them, so i was interested in that. also i have heard about of LOT of people who are in love with Cardan (not just Bee lol) and wanted to meet him for myself haha. mostly it's been the positive reviews and fantasy world that it's set in!

julia (no_mourners_no_funerals) | 100 comments Mod
i feel like Locke is going to be a good character! he seems pretty cool, but, uh, hasn't really done much so far

btw i love the names in this book, especially Taryn :)

message 24: by Mollie (new)

Mollie Honestly, I’m only on chapter 4 but this book got dark REAL fast. It’s very well written however. I love the characters and how their described and I can really see how much each character stands out in their own way. I love seeing the story in Judes perspective however I would personally love to see it in Vivis. She is Madocs true daughter and honestly I think it would be pretty cool too see the life through her perspective. Just my personal opinion.

message 25: by Beenish (new)

Beenish (beenishamir) I agree. I first thought we'd get her story but it's obvious what her story is. she hates him and that's all. but the sisters stories are also just too good! plus, Jude is my favourite character. I don't like Taryn though

message 26: by julia, Event Manager (new)

julia (no_mourners_no_funerals) | 100 comments Mod
i like having it through Jude's perspective because her not fitting into the world makes her describe things with a sense of awe and it really makes the world come alive

Molli, i agree, it definitely did get dark, but i love it so far

message 27: by Beenish (new)

Beenish (beenishamir) I too love the dark and cunning nature of faeries and how they play with plain truths and tell lies through it. it's just so well done.

message 28: by BookLover (new)

BookLover (myrauh) Yeah and I totally wasn't surprised that Vivi was bi. It just seemed so her.

message 29: by julia, Event Manager (new)

julia (no_mourners_no_funerals) | 100 comments Mod
yeah, i liked that line about how Taryn wasn't the only one who planned to fall in love. it was set up nicely.

the lie thing! yes! and how lying is such an impressive thing to Faeries

message 30: by Beenish (new)

Beenish (beenishamir) exactly! it's kind of attractive haha

hi guys i’m so behind!!! ahh i just started school up again and it’s been overwhelming so i’m trying to catch up. but i just finished chapter 5 and so far it’s really intriguing! i’m totally new to the fantasy fiction world and honestly it’s hard to keep up haha. Like how they describe things and the faery world it’s hard to imagine it in my head but i try very hard lol. Hopefully, once I get into more fantasy fiction books especially faery types it’ll come easier to me.

I already about the romance in this book from the many edits on tiktok and insta, but I LOVE jude very much. She is definitely my favorite character so far. I love how she is strong and resilient. She is the total OPPOSITE of her twin sister Taryn. She is brave and I love that about Jude. She defies and wants to be strong and powerful. She isn’t scared and she wants to better herself.

From reading on your guys comments, I love how Vivi is bi too! I also feel torn between them liking Madoc and them conforming to their new lifestyle. I know Vivi favors the mortal world more considering she has a lover there. I have a feeling she doesn’t like Madoc and the entire faery world and tries to not be a part of it because it is the reason she lost her parents. I’m not sure!

As for the crew, I may favor Locke out of all of them? I absolutely love how he winked at Jude. BUT I kind of love how hot Prince Carson sounds?? Haha I don’t know. Theyre total asses but I absotulety love how cunning they are.

omg Cardan* my bad haha

message 33: by Beenish (new)

Beenish (beenishamir) Eventually, she stopped all of it, but
I believe there is a part of her that hates us for adapting. For
making the best of things. For making this our home.

so I just started reading and I know I'm behind too but I loved this line and it made me think Jude and her sister were able to adapt because they were young and at that age, it's very easy to get used to new things while Vivi was older and understood and remembered things and I think that's nice and important. having your mother and the father you grew up with getting killed in front of your eyes in a single day and within minutes isn't easy to go through. and then living with that man. I just love Jude and Vivi!

message 34: by Beenish (new)

Beenish (beenishamir) exactly! I love their cunning nature and how well written it is. I'm all over in love haha

I love Jude and Vivi, too! I have nothing against Taryn but it looks like you do LMFAO. I don’t like how she doesn’t stand up for herself and allows people to walk all over her. She is just very scared most of the time and is submissive to everyone around her.

And yes! That quote! I know Vivi is older, but she’s only 3 years older than her sisters. I feel like maybe she also blames herself for her parents death? Idk i’m just throwing accusations and opinions out there. But I’d probably be a Vivi if my parents died by the man who is now looking after me. I would not conform whatsoever

message 36: by Beenish (new)

Beenish (beenishamir) okay, chapter 3. I kind of felt weird about Cardan's tail but now I love it, hehe.

haha I actually do only coz I've read the trilogy lol. I firstly don't like her coz she wants her way into faerie in a way which is just not that nice to me.

3 years older means she was 10. and I can relate to her coz I'm oldest and have been through some stuff since I was 6 or 7 and I remember everything so yes. I understand Vivi.

exactly! me too.

message 37: by Beenish (new)

Beenish (beenishamir) chapter 5. that's exactly why I don't like Taryn for one reason. the "I'll fall in love reason". that she would depend on someone. I like Jude for planning her life to be independent

message 38: by meimyselfandbooks, Discussion Manager (new)

meimyselfandbooks | 138 comments Mod
I’m the oldest too and i have gotten a lot of scrutiny of being the oldest. I understand Vivi, but i’ll never belittle my siblings for thinking differently than I because they may not have the same mindset or thoughts as me. But I adore Vivi in every way possible.

and yes! Taryn is so different. I’m not sure if you watched Bridgerton or Little Women, but there’s always one sister who dreams of love/marriage, and one who dreams of independence and fighting off the matriarchy.

message 39: by Beenish (new)

Beenish (beenishamir) I agree. everyone is different but it's not easy to accept that your younger siblings, who not only lost their real mother but also father are okay with living with the killer.

and you're right I haven't watched those but I get it :)

message 40: by Zece (new)

Zece Wow I absolutely despise Carden. What’s worse is I know he’ll be redeemed but honestly, no amount of trauma justifies projecting it on to others. So far I really like Jude, she is very much a typical YA protagonist so far but she is interesting.

message 41: by Zece (new)

Zece Beenish wrote: "chapter 5. that's exactly why I don't like Taryn for one reason. the "I'll fall in love reason". that she would depend on someone. I like Jude for planning her life to be independent"
Same I really didn't enjoy Taryn but I think her wanting to get married isn't the thing. I feel like she's a more realistic example of what would happen if someone grew up in that environment. And wanting to get married is ok, not everyone needs to be a typical 'strong independent women' but she projects her own ideology on to Jude and that is annoying

message 42: by Ellen (new)

Ellen I’m already in love with this book!
I somehow feel the same way about Madoc, he did an awful thing, which I still hate him for, but he seems to really care about all of the children and that makes me like him.
Cardan is just horrible, but I like the character. And yes Locke seems really interesting, I really want to learn more about him. Can’t wait to read more tonight!

And sorry, I’m not very good at writing in english!

message 43: by Beenish (new)

Beenish (beenishamir) yes, I agree. maybe it is okay to just get married. some girls just are like that. they don't want to do anything and just relax after being married but stopping Jude from her goals ain't one of them.

message 44: by Beenish (new)

Beenish (beenishamir) I actually love both Madoc and Cardan for how strongly their character is written to make us feel.
Cardan is written such a way, that not just because he's bad, we would hate him. he's very very strongly bad hahahah.
as for Madoc his character is just as strongly written that we find ourselves in the dilemma of whether we can forgive him or not.
the answer of course is obvious for me. I wouldn't forgive him.

and idk if I said this before or not but I love the difference in all sisters.
Vivi, the daughter who doesn't accept the world she belongs to and hates her father.
Taryn, who has accepted the new world as her own and is adaptive. and she's accepted the way she has to live in it.
Jude, like Taryn knows only this world as hers coz that's how she's been brought up and all she wants is to stop letting people have power over you which I think is just as great a realization as a student who's bullied at school might have and stands up for himself

message 45: by Lacey (new)

Lacey | 2 comments Probably a bit late to the party lol but have not long started reading. It’s interesting so far. It’s a difficult situation that these three sisters are forced into and I imagine that the conflict of what has happened to their parents vs the beauty of the world they’ve mostly grown up in will play a big part in this book.

message 46: by Beenish (new)

Beenish (beenishamir) of course. just read :) can't wait to hear your thoughts

savi 𝜗𝜚. ݁₊ (wylanheart) | 6 comments Omg, I’m loving the setting!

message 48: by Beenish (new)

Beenish (beenishamir) I'm glad you're enjoying .. it's really a wonderful faerie world. it's equally light, bright and vivid and cruel and dark.

message 49: by TOG_ACOTAR (new)

TOG_ACOTAR I don't really like Taryn that much. She's so submissive, and I don't like that she thinks that by doing what Cardan and his friends want them to do, they'll be fine.

message 50: by Beenish (new)

Beenish (beenishamir) I don't like that either. it's like not fighting for a life worth living at all. just surviving.
