Roseanna M White has a couple different series set in different times...Edwardian, WWI era, and one series spans American history with each book taking place during a war. I love her writing and attention to detail and historical facts.
Far Side of the Sea by Kate Breslin is set during WWI.Also, if you are ok with a little Christian theme thrown in, Elizabeth Camden has written several historical romances. They are set in the U.S. usually in the 1800s and have strong female characters. They usually focus around little known historic events. I am a big fan of most of them. Against the Tide is my favorite.
If you are looking for something "new" I won't be of much help but if you are willing to explore something old, and be a patient reader, allowing the book to slowly wash over and through you, my favorite historical fiction novel is Song of Years set during the Civil War. My mother convinced my dad and many of my siblings to read it. I have convinced my husband and all (but one) of my six children to read it. It's a five star from most of us.
These are some authors/books I've enjoyed. Some also write regency and contemporary, so just keep an eye on the descriptions if you decide to try one.Sarah M. Eden - Western, Victorian
Jennifer Moore - War of 1812
Joyce DiPastena - Medieval
From Ash and Stone by Julie Daines - Medieval
Marcia Lynn McClure - Medieval, Western, Pirates
Heather B. Moore - Love is Come, Condemn Me Not, The Paper Daughters of Chinatown
Shanna Hatfield - Western, WW2
Ciara Knight - McKinnie Mail Order Brides
Laura Beers - Western
Rebecca Connolly - Western
Christian Authors -
Jen Turano
Elizabeth Camden
Elizabeth Ludwig
Tamera Alexander
Mary Connealy - Western
Karen Witemeyer - Western
Kate Breslin - WW1
Sarah Sundin - WW2
Kelly Eileen Hake - Western
Some that I have read that I really liked lately are A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles and The Winternight Trilogy by Katherine Arden. Both are set in Moscow ( 1920's and 1400's respectively). Though I would caution that neither are Squeaky Clean. They have references to Mistresses, ravishing women, touching women, etc but it is "behind closed doors" and without details.
Michelle Griep is another great one. She has lots of book and all are period stories of some kind. Her book The Captured Bride is part of a series called Daughters of the Mayflower all the books in this series are written by authors who write clean books!!
Check out Jane Kirkpatrick. She has written a lot of good historical fiction, mostly about American women.
EA Shanniaks Whitman Series are great. They are Western. I had the honor of narrating one of them in the series and I loved it and own the first 2 in the series as well. Here is a link to the first one on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07...

As the title suggests I'm looking for historical romance novels for adults not in the regency era. I don't have a problem with the regency era but it seems like that time period dominates clean romance and I want to find something new.
Thank you!
