Greetings readers... half way through January already and I have to admit that I am already looking forward to all things spring!! there is lots of hope as the vaccine starts to roll out and we look forward to a return to normalcy.

for now, those of us in Ontario should have lots of time to hunker down and read during the lockdown!

what are you reading? what is next?

Allison ༻hikes the bookwoods༺ (allisonhikesthebookwoods) | 1783 comments Good morning! I don't usually hate winter, but this year I can't wait for it to be over. I think I just had a great summer this past year. It was so low key and relaxing. I want to get back to it!

This week I am reading The Push from NetGalley. I've had the ARC for a while, but I wanted to wait until January to read it so I could use it for Bingo!

In audiobooks this week, I listened to the latest from Sophie Kinsella, Love Your Life. I've read a few books lately that felt very negative and I needed a little ray of sunshine. Sophie Kinsella always comes through with the lighthearted reading for me. I just started Ready Player Two. If it's half as fun as the first one, I'll be happy.

Susan | 852 comments Happy Friday! The past week and a half has been really stressful and I feel like I'm back at the beginning of the pandemic when I couldn't focus on anything and reading became a chore.

I finished reading Autopsy of a Boring Wife, which I did enjoy. I was sad to see this not make Canada Reads, but I'm glad I read it and look forward to the English translation of the next book in the series. I also finished Cane, which was a slog and not a great way to kick off the list of essential African-American books I want to read this year. :-(

I have various books on the go but am struggling with them, so I decided to put them all aside to read Concrete Rose over the weekend for pure pleasure. So far, so good with this one. Maybe this will be the palate cleanser I need.

Heather(Gibby) (heather-gibby) | 466 comments Morning everyone, so today is my birthday-don't suppose I will receive any books today, so my read for the I-1 Bingo square is Come, Thou Tortoise which i am halfway through.

I finally received my copy of The Four Winds yesterday (I won the giveaway form Goodreads on November 12th-I had just about given up)

We are on the tail end of a winter storm, and in full critical Code Red lock down, so my birthday will be spent with Hubby, a homemade pizza, and a bottle of wine.

Allison ༻hikes the bookwoods༺ (allisonhikesthebookwoods) | 1783 comments Happy birthday @Heather(Gibby)! I've had Come, Thou Tortoise on my TBR for ages and I'm looking forward to the publication of The Four Winds. Hope you enjoy them both as well as your pizza and wine!

Petra | 708 comments Happy Birthday, Heather! Pizza and wine sounds like a good way to celebrate.
I read Come, Thou Tortoise a few years back and really enjoyed it. Hope it's working for you, too.

@Allison Hikes the Bookwoods, I thought Ready Player One was terrific. I hope to read Ready Player Two soon(ish). Looking forward to your thoughts on it.

I read Laughing All the Way to the Mosque this past week. I enjoyed the humour throughout but found the contents too light, so in the end I wasn't satisfied.
I'm now reading Cold Comfort Farm.

We aren't in the severe lock-down that Ontario is. I've been able to meet a friend for a walk in the park, meet for a (socially distanced) tai-chi practice in the park and gone for a couple of jogs this week. It will be a wonderful day when we can meet up with friends for coffee or a lunch again, instead of in the cold outdoors. LOL. Looking forward to a warm Spring.

Kathleen | 546 comments Happy Birthday, Heather(Gibby)! Best wishes for a wonderful cozy day! Enjoy the pizza and wine.

Lisa (lisafriel) | 210 comments Happy Birthday @Heather(Gibby)! Pizza and wine are on the menu for us tonight too. Enjoy!!

This week I read The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab. I really enjoyed it.

Now I am reading Jonny Appleseed by Joshua Whitehead. I am only a little ways in, but I am finding it pretty vulgar. I hope it gets better.

✿✿✿May | 672 comments @Heather, Happy Birthday!! Pizza and Wine sound amazing!

This week I finisehd The Arrangement, which I enjoyed. Currently reading The Henna Artist. My brain just cannot tolerate serious reads right now. Does anyone else feel this way?

I have not read any of the Canada Reads shortlist. I don't think the library holds will come through, so will just watch the debates and read the winner at the end. It's not the same without the meet up with the ladies!

Sarah | 386 comments @ Heather happy belated birthday! Your birthday plans sound so familiar to my covid birthday March 2020. I hope it was a lovely evening.

@Petra I recently finished Laughing All the Way to the Mosque and I would agree with your statement.

On Audio, I just finished Autopsy of a Boring Wife and I really enjoyed it. I definitely read the sequel. Yesterday I started listening to Eleanor (Roosevelt) and, at an hour in, am really enjoying it so far.

I am just in the last 8 pages of The Braid by Laetitia Colombani. I’m loving it! I will then begin Olive Kitteridge.

Mj I’m about 40% through How to Pronounce Knife. Wasn’t sure what to expect due to diverse ratings on Goodreads but when it won the Scotiabank Giller Prize decided to give it a try and am using it for a 2021 Bingo Square.

Am really enjoying it. Souvankham Thammavongsa is such a good writer . She creates so much impact (intellectual and emotional) in just a few words and by writing about the “little” things I got a real sense about the "big" things. Her years writing poetry are obvious in her debut work of fiction. Plan to finish the short story collection this week and down the road read more of her work.

@ Heather (Gibby) Happy belated birthday. Hope you and your hubby enjoyed your Covid birthday meal and celebration. The quirky and humourous Come, Thou Tortoise sounds Covid shutdown choice.

@ Lisa - Jonny Appleseed is definitely raw and in your face and really doesn't stop. However I do think it's worth finishing. Underneath the "acting out", I think you'll find a sweet man-child looking to be loved and to find support and his place in his world.

Hi all... focus seems to be an issue (like May)... I have started and abandoned a lot of books lately. I am sure that they are all great books but it is maybe not the right time for them.

I did enjoy Tilly and the Crazy Eights as a palate cleanser although the title was unfortunate and read through Modern Comfort Food: A Barefoot Contessa Cookbook

I have started and abandoned, for now (though no fault of the books):
Concrete Rose
Jonny Appleseed
Butter Honey Pig Bread

after hearing so much chatter about Bridgertons on Netflix, I am part way through the first book of that series - usually not my genre but light and easy to read. The Duke and I

@Heather(Gibby) - I hope that you enjoyed your birthday!
