Cat (cat_uk) | 2147 comments Hello everyone, welcome to UNO which this year is a festival of film classics!

Please introduce yourselves: who you are (and your preferred pronouns), where you are based, what you like to read and how much UNO experience you have.

I'm Cat (she/her), based in London UK. I read all sorts, though have been a bit out of reading-sorts recently. Happily a spot of some space opera (one of my favourite genres) seems to have done the trick! Currently I'm reading a big fantasy book (Foundryside) and listening to a historical queer coming-of-age (Under the Udala Trees). I've also got a non-fiction (Black and British: A Forgotten History) on the go...
I've played UNO a few times now, and really enjoy the fun and frustration of trying to find books to fit our cards ;-)

In terms of playing... I like to use a planning sheet to be able to see all the information for each book. So, if you can add your book information to the sheet (I've linked it in post 6 above) as you go and just pop a post in here to say when you finish it that will be perfect! If you can add your finished books to your Uno shelf too, that really helps Danielle, Kate and I in our checks.

However, if you don't want to add to the sheet, then you'll need to post a FULL completion post here. Full means: Link to the book, date finished and all the cards it fits and why. This challenge there is no need to give a rating or review - though if you have read a good book plus do let us all know!

And please please PLEASE make sure that you pop in to this thread at least once a week to say that you are still about and playing. If you need to drop out PM one of Kate, Danielle or myself saying so, so that we don't go mad trying to chase you down!

Terézia (tereziatt) | 14 comments Hey, I'm Terézia (she/her), based in Eastern Slovakia. I have some experience with UNO the card game, but none as far as this book challenge is concerned, hah. Concurrently I'm getting out of a moody reading slump, but I enjoy reading literary fiction, folk tales, satire and psychological horror the most. Also I've recently started dabbing in some poetry.

I enjoy finding books to fit the card prompts and working with spreadsheets, so that part of the challenge is right up my alley :D

Looking forward to February 1st!

Thais Vieira | 38 comments Hi, my name is Thais (she/her), I'm from Brazil!!

I love to read mystery, non-fiction, fiction, fantasy.. actually, pretty much anything that's well-written lol
I realized I was reading too little for someone who liked it too much, so I started using GR more actively and participating in challenges, because I'm very competitive and I think that will help me to read more.

It's my first time playing UNO book and I'm very excited! I hope we can be friends and share this passion and lots of good stories.

That's it. Feel free to add me guys!!

message 14: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 2147 comments Hi Terezia (sorry, I've no idea how to get the accent) & Thais! Great to have you on board :)

I don't know how much you like to plan your reading, but if you do, we've some colour cards that need claiming! For colour cars, the cover of the edition you read has to be at least 50% the colour AND it has to meet the number requirement for the card. Because these are tricky, it's really good if team members can claim the card

They are:
2 Yellow
4 Red
8 Yellow
7 Red
6 Yellow
6 Green
0 Red
1 Blue

We've also 3 Wild Draw 4s, where we need to duplicate a colour card. 1 of those will be the 8 Yellow, with a Draw 2 so we don't need to worry about that one. One I'd like to be the 4 or 7 Red, and one can be any of the other colour cards!

I think I've made that too complicated.....

TL;DR: shout out if you have a book or two you will commit to read in February that meets a colour card!

My reading has been a bit off lately, but hoping uno brings it back somewhat.

This is my 6th time playing uno and it’s a fun challenge.

Works for -
2 yellow (c: Turner)
6 yellow (c: Savannah)
8 yellow (c: Eli)

Edit: I think it might work for 8 also. Checked and does.

Cat (cat_uk) | 2147 comments I've found a couple of possible yellow covers:

Love Her or Lose Her (Hot & Hammered, #2) by Tessa Bailey - Tessa author - 2 Yellow

The Minority Council (Matthew Swift, #4) by Kate Griffin - Swift char - 6 Yellow ??? << not 100% sure this is sufficient yellow - what are the thoughts from the team?

ETA: and a red
The Art of Dying (Raven, Fisher, and Simpson, #2) by Ambrose Parry - Fisher char - 4 Red

Sunny (sunnyisreading) | 67 comments Hi guys! I'm Sunny (she/her), and I'm based in Slovenia! I mostly stick to fantasy, thrillers and sci-fi, but I read a plethora of other genres as well when I feel like it (I'm a big mood reader). I've played UNO before last year, but the whole experience was a bit ruined due to corona starting and my school going fully online.

I'm currently a graphic design student in my 1st year of uni, and I have 2 or 3 exams left in February (until the 12th), but then I'll have all the time in the world to read! Last year has been super slow for me regarding reading and whatnot, but I'm looking to get back on track with UNO.

I'll look through our spreadsheet and everything later tonight when I'm done with studying for the day, but I'm so excited to play this year again with all of you :D

Kate (kcbond) | 248 comments Waking up and so glad to see people popping in! Welcome!

I'm Kate (she/her/hers) and I'm in Oklahoma in the U.S. I'm pretty much a historical fiction, contemporary fiction reader with some magical realism thrown in. My boyfriend is a big fantasy reader so I've been reading more of those as well. I also usually get through a few non-fiction works every month because of time spent in the car (Audible is my friend!). But overall, I will read anything (well, okay maybe not anything - I've done enough challenges to know there are some really weird books out there!)

I've played UNO in the past and been a co-captain on other challenges but not on UNO and I'm excited to help out.

In my personal life I'm the Director of Formation and Discipleship (basically I run all of our educational/event programming and write a lot of policies and procedures) for the Episcopal (Anglican) Diocese of Oklahoma. I have a very inquisitive and fantastic daughter who will be 8 in April and is a huge reader as well.

Redshirt (kessa_cirtos) | 116 comments Good afternoon, friends!

I am Redshirt (they/them.) I like in Washington state and am a safety manager for an engineering firm. I love reading, writing, and gaming. At any point, I'm doing two out of the three, with very little time for whichever hobby is left out. During the pandemic, I managed to shoot over my book reading challenge by 60 additional books. (I'd only estimated I'd get through 20.) This year, I'm angling for 25 and I've already give four in the bag!

I really love fantasy/sci-fi and YA, but I've been drawing books from other genres lately to try to challenge myself. So I've been dabbling in fiction, memoirs, and the like.

This is my first UNO challenge and I'm pretty unsure where to start! I did make my shelf and I've thrown friend requests to everyone here. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. I've skimmed through some of the messages here and see that I should put in a reservation for some of the colors and numbers?

For a yellow cover book that's also a quick read: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4...

I rated it three stars, in that I finished it and it was okay. It's a bit dry, but I was on a nuclear reactor kick after watching Chernobyl.

Feel free to throw me personal messages! I'm pretty busy, but love to make friends and banter about favorite reads and travel spots. ^^

message 41: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 2147 comments Hi Redshirt! You don't have to claim any books, and certainly not for the numbers. It helps the captain group in the planning is all. What you need to do is
1. Read
2. Report the read (on the sheet or here)
3. Read some more
4. Report in here once a week

and, through it all... have fun!

:)

Sharon (sharon_alexandr) | 337 comments Hi! I am Sharon (she/her) from Pennsylvania. For my reading, I tend to stick to fiction, mystery/thriller, women's lit, and historical fiction. I love a good celebrity autobiography (my last book of 2020 was A Promised Land and I can't wait to get my hands on The Meaning of Mariah Carey). I read e-books, physical books, and listen to audio books. I'm working from home now, so my audio book listening has cut way down now that I don't have an hour commute. My husband is a big reader too, mostly fantasy, so sometimes I check out a book on his recommendation.

I've played UNO a couple times now and I love it! These team challenges always boost my reading. I feel like I've been in a bit of a reading slump the last few months, so I'm looking forward to climbing out of that with you all :)

I tend to get most of my books from the library, so I don't plan out as much since I never know when books will come off the waiting list for me. I'm not great with spreadsheets, so if it's ok, I'll just make the full completion posts on this thread.

When I'm not reading, I am the Executive Director of a Community Foundation and a mom to two super cute puppies.

Can't wait to start the challenge!

I have A Promised Land on audio to listen to at some point this year.

Redshirt (kessa_cirtos) | 116 comments Thank you guys! I appreciate the warm welcome.

Welcome Sharon! Have you or are you planning to read Becoming by Michelle Obama? What breed are your puppies? What are their names?

I can definitely plan to have a book read at the tail-end of our Uno Challenge. I'm going to read this book: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/5... Which qualifies for the number 4. So any last minute hand completion, I'm guaranteed to get through that one once it's released! Honestly, if anyone else wants to read Martha Wells' Murderbot Diaries, I'd highly recommend it. They're short with fantastic representation (polyam, different gender and sexualities.)
