Shaw | 923 comments Hi team! This chat should be officially open sometime this afternoon but if you can post earlier-then great. I will be your captain on this upcoming fabulous UNO book journey. This is my fourth UNO and I’ve been on a winning team twice. So let’s make that a three-peat this year! I like to play as a read whatever book fits kind of game except for the color cards. The color covers can be tricky so I like to have those claimed so any problems are resolved before reading. So just let me know what everyone thinks about that plan.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments To check if you book has enough of the required color:

1:enlarge the book cover on goodreads
2: right click on picture and copy link location
3: go to Tin-Eye Color Extractor
4: Past link where it says enter Url Image and click on extract colors
5: when results pops up, uncheck box that says "exclude background colors"

Or ask Mary and she'd check it for you.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments Not sure if I really need spots but just in case there they are.

message 12: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments I'm from Massachusetts, so in Eastern Standard Time. Avid reader. I've played in and captained numerous team challenges all over good reads since I joined in 2009. This is my second time playing Uno because I only discovered this group last year.

Challenges like this tend to really amp up my reading. I'm lucky enough to be able to listen to audio books a lot at work. Especially this time of year when my office mate (aka my boss, aka Mom) is wintering in Florida. Not a huge fan of YA, erotica with no plot, gory horror or anything overly religious. But I will read the occasional erotica and YA in a pinch for a group challenge. If I have to and with a lot of complaining.

Other than that, I read mostly anything: romance, mystery, historical, non-ficiton, paranormal etc...,

message 13: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments I can't remember what team I was on last year and where we placed.

message 14: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments Oh Yay! I see we have our first set of cards already. Makes planning books easier. I copied them into my own spreadsheet so I can fill what I find in somewhere.

I've always found it best for everyone to list whatever options their books work for so books can be moved around as needed. Sometimes you get a book that only works for one thing but you get another one that works for several. Also for there to be a separate tracking sheet for people to fill in spots as they read/start reading. Unless we're allowed to move stuff around on the main sheet.

message 15: by Mary X (last edited Jan 20, 2021 06:33AM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments It's easy to copy the sheet for yourself if you have a google account.

Off to see what I can find for the color cards.

I can create a working page for book tracking if needed.

message 16: by Shaw (new)

Shaw | 923 comments I like to use a team tracking sheet as well but if someone doesn’t want to add their books to it they can just post it in the group chat when they’ve read a book and then we as captain and co-captains can fill it in.

message 17: by Denielle (new)

Denielle Elliston (denielleelliston) | 31 comments Sounds great! I like the idea of a team tracking sheet!!

Hi Everyone!
My name is Denielle, nice to meet you all! I am a co-captain and new to Uno myself and an avid reader, I love all genres of books. Happy to be here!!

message 18: by Leslie Ann (new)

Leslie Ann | 341 comments Hi , from Colorado so I am mountain time. I would love a tracking sheet also . My favorite genres are mystery, sci-fi and horror. I am really not a romance or ya fan but have been known to occasionally read them and have found some I enjoy. I listed my reading as 10 books a month thinking I would cut back this year( I am at 13 books with 11 days to go 😂) I will take a look at the ss and start planning. : )

message 19: by Leslie Ann (new)

Leslie Ann | 341 comments Just went through my books and found several with a red cover and works for the 3 card. : )

message 20: by Mary X (last edited Jan 20, 2021 11:38AM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments should I attempt a tracking sheet? I don't want to step on any toes if someone has an idea on how they want one done. I'll probably just try to find the one my last team used and copy that format.

Also I have a meeting tonight so I might not be until tomorrow or Friday.

message 21: by Mary X (last edited Jan 20, 2021 12:03PM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments Well scratch the idea copy the format from the one from my team last year. I found my old team: Satellite Croissant. But couldn't access the tracking sheet we used. I can still do one, it'll just take me longer. Let me know. I might start playing with one anyway just in case no one else wants to make it.

eta: I had some time and created a very basic spreadsheet with a spot for each potential item: #, letters, skip, reverse etc. Here's a link to it. Use it, don't use it, modify it however you want. I will not be offended if it's not used or it's changed. I spent a whopping 5 minutes on it.

Sarah (psitssarahh) | 419 comments Hi everyone!!! I am so excited to be competing this year. This is my 4th year competing and I love being on chatty groups. Uno really increases my reading and honestly it is one of my favorite parts of the year! I live in MI and am a therapist so reading is my #1 form of self-care :)

My favorite genre is romance and I can whip through a romance book pretty quickly. They are great picks for me, for challenges. I also enjoy YA, and historical fiction. I have no preference for HOW I read, I enjoy physical, digital and audio books! I tend to have more than one book going at once. I am working on wrapping up like 6 books before the challenge starts hahah.

message 23: by Jonnie (new)

Jonnie Deitz | 181 comments Hi, everyone. I am from Ohio, but currently living in Brisbane Australia. So I am about13-15 hours ahead of you all. I am currently a stay at home mom so I do have a decent bit of free time. I will try to go through my books to see where they best fit so I can add then to the appropriate areas.

I like to read mostly suspense, mystery, horror, and YA dystopian novels. But I have been trying to expand my reading base and I read a lot with my kids. I look forward to talking to you all through out this challenge. Good luck and I hope we all have some fun.

Jonnie Deitz | 181 comments The Bend in Redwood Road The Bend in Redwood Road (Missing Pieces, #1) by Danielle Stewart Would you consider this a green cover? I would, but I want to make sure. Thanks

message 25: by Alicia (new)

Alicia | 46 comments Hi everyone. Im from Wisconsin. This is my first time playing uno and im only down for 2 books a month bc im an extremely slow reader. Im very excited to be playing though! I'll read just about anything but i really dont like scifi or political/courtroom dramas. James Patterson is not my friend, lol.
Ive been hunting down colored covers just in case i get one. Otherwise im hoping this game helps me with my tbr list. I hope this counts as my checkin.

Thanks everyone!

message 26: by alex (new)

alex (alexthebookish) Hi guys, I'm from Maryland (EST) and this is my first time playing! I read a ton and I'm super excited to play with you guys!

I read a lot of YA/NA fantasy, though I'm also a mystery fan.

Alicia | 46 comments https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3...

If this counts towards 3 blue, I'll take that card. Hopefully you agree the cover is blue enough and its book 3 in a series im reading.

message 28: by alex (new)

alex (alexthebookish) https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/5... Also, I could totally do this for 0 green, if it counts. The cover is green, but it's not really a standalone? It's more of a prequel? Not sure if it'll work, but if it does, I'd be happy to do it. I'm also sure I can figure something else out if that doesn't work-

message 29: by Mary X (last edited Jan 20, 2021 07:03PM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments I approved access for everyone that it alerted me that requested. The only gmail account I have is for my second job as my Elks Lodge Secretary. So it will probably look like it's coming from the Hartford Elks. The first 2 pages are just 2 pages of the main spreadsheet copied. The 3rd page is for filling in books with all their card options.

Alicia | 46 comments https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...
I could also do 6 red if this book is approved based on cover. The author is Sara Benincasa.

message 31: by Jonnie (new)

Jonnie Deitz | 181 comments So I have another question. If the setting of a book is Chicago, Illinois can I still use for a 5 (setting starts with an I) or since Chicago is the specific place would C be the letter for the setting?

message 32: by Shaw (new)

Shaw | 923 comments The main setting place is Chicago so that’s the location that counts. So unfortunately that would be a C. But we often have mini challenges that include that letter so you can save it or if it counts for another card you can read it when we start.
And Alex, because it is a prequel it is still considered part of the series and is therefore not a stand alone book. So unless there is a Z location or character it doesn’t count.
I will also post a list of the covered cards that everyone is going to read after the 26th since that is the last day that everyone has to check in. So keep posting them and we’ll get that together before the challenge begins. And also remember to check the countdown for your particular area so you don’t start the book early as it won’t count if started before the 1st.
And Mary- thank you for the spreadsheet posting! That’s really helpful.

message 33: by Shaw (new)

Shaw | 923 comments And Alicia-yes The Duke is a blue cover and does count.

Do you want us to list all of our books in the UNO folder on here so we all can see what can be read for each category or do you just want the ones we read on here? I just created a spread sheet with all of my books so I can read the most useful ones.

Ok Thanks. I will note that on my settings.

message 36: by Shaw (new)

Shaw | 923 comments I think just the color cover cards posted on here in case there are any problems. Then just post the ones you are reading to the spreadsheet as that is the easiest way to see what books are needed. However, if you don’t want to use the spreadsheet then just post the finished book to the thread.

message 37: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments I appear to be on the computer at opposite times from everyone else.

I work on one all day and that's when I tend to come on here. Then I don't want to look at a computer in the evening. Unless there's a team challenge going on then I'll check in more. I don't mind updating books for people uncomfortable with updating spreadsheets. I'm kind of a weird person that likes spreadsheets. It's weird because I'm actually a horribly disorganized person.

Maddielucy(Patti) | 217 comments HI everyone! I'm Patti and am excited to play. I read a lot and am pretty open to any genre, although not a huge fan of sci fi or nonfiction. DO mostly mystery, contemporary, fantasy, YA, romance. I played last year and I think my team name was something about pie.

I will just put my stuff on the spread sheet to see what is needed. I'm also happy to take assignments if we have trouble with something.

I live in Florida. :)

message 39: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments I ran Alex's book through Tin Eye Color Extractor and it's borderline green. How strict do we think they'll be on that?

message 40: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments I put the directions and a link for how to use Tin Eye Color Extractor in post 9. But I'm also happy to check them for people.

message 41: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments Jonnie's book is also borderline on the green percentage.

It took the liberty of adding a couple of books to the spreadsheet that people asked about here and definitely work for the color card they mentioned. Mainly to help others when seeing what we might have covered already.

That said, duplicates of color cards can be used for the Wild spots and earn more points for than a non-color card. I think.

message 42: by Jonnie (new)

Jonnie Deitz | 181 comments I filled in the spreadsheet with a book I can start for the first hand being a reverse. But I also have a lot of books that would fit for 8 and since we need four 8's for the first hand I can switch to a different one if I need to to finish the hand quicker. Just let me know before the start date. Thanks.

message 43: by Denielle (new)

Denielle Elliston (denielleelliston) | 31 comments I love that everyone is from all over! So excited to play with everyone, I am learning the ropes as I go too! But it will be alot of fun!

message 44: by Shaw (new)

Shaw | 923 comments Thankfully Tineye is no longer the final say with those pesky percentages but I use it too. So I think the Bend in Redwood Road is fine cuz it looks green but we would have to get captain/co-captain group consensus on the Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. It looks more black than green to me. But we can do that and use it for the Wild as was mentioned earlier.

message 45: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments Good to know that about Tin Eye.

Maddielucy(Patti) | 217 comments Mary C -- it says I need permission to access your SS can you give it to me please? Thanks!!

message 47: by Sara (new)

Sara | 68 comments Hello! I'm in Oklahoma (CST) and I haven't played uno before. I read kind of a lot and am open to most genres. I've requested access to the spreadsheet and hopefully being able to see that clears up my confusion because I am overwhelmed reading through all these messages!

message 48: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments Maddie did you request access from the sheet? I didn't get a prompt to let you in yet. I got one to give Sara access.

Sara- It will make more sense once we start playing but you can ask any questions you have on this chat or you can message myself or either co-captains as well.

message 50: by Shaw (new)

Shaw | 923 comments As you can see from the list at the top of our chat, our color cards are looking great. If anyone has any other books that will work for the empty slots, just post it here and I will edit as necessary. And it isn't required to read any of the color covers so don't feel pressured to do so.
