Caroline (paper_moonshine) | 822 comments Posted for ease of reference:

◈ This is a 3 month team challenge starting 1 February 2021 and running until 30 April 2021.

◈ Only books STARTED after the challenge begins can count. The challenge starts on Wednesday February 1, 2019 at 7pm AEDST (Australian Eastern Daylight Savings Time). To see when this is in your time zone, use this
Countdown Clock

◈ Books can be carried over into the next month, as long as they were started after your time on February 1st. So books started in February and finished in March WILL count for March.

◈ Books must be more than 100 pages in length. If it is a Childrens book or a graphic novel, we need to verify it is more than 25,000 words on arbookfind.com.

◈ Your finished books need to be on your UNO shelf AND marked as "read" for them to count. Please add them to your shelf only after finishing the book. Make sure the dates are correct and within the time limit.

◈ If you want to reread a book you can not have read it within the last 6 months.

◈ Please make notes IN THIS THREAD of how your book may count. The more options we have the better!

◈ Jammin' Jenny and I will keep track of all the possible options and shuffle around cards as needed so it's really important that you give us as much information as possible for each book you read.

◈ This is a social challenge, not a competitive one. We'd love to get points, but the main aim of the game is to have fun, read lots, and make new friends :D

Caroline (paper_moonshine) | 822 comments The UNO Cards
(view spoiler)

For book titles starting with an article (A/An/The), the article can be ignored or used. So The Hiding Place, for example, could be used as title starting with T or H

UNO FAQs. Please let us know if the answer to your question is not here and we'll be happy to find out for you in the Captains group :D

Quick Reference
Children's Books. These books have been pre-approved in previous years and do not need to be checked with arbookfind.com - if a book you want to read isn't on here, that's no problem. You can still read it as long as it hits the 25,000 word count minimum.

Colour Inspiration!
❤️ Red covers
💙 Blue covers
💚 Green covers
💛 Yellow covers
Another set of lists with books that have been pre-approved to work for color covers. If you've got a book you want to read for a color cover that's not on this list, that's fine. If you're not sure if your book is "x-color enough" we'll all take a look at it as a team to figure it out :D

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 871 comments Other Helpful Information

Children's Books
Children's books must either (1) be an audio-book over hrs long (or have a version that is) or (2) have 25,000+ words in order to count. Some books have already been approved for UNO and these are on the Approved UNO Children's book list.

If your book is not on that list, and does not have an audiobook of 3 hrs or more, you can find the word count by going to this website and searching for your book: AR bookfinder: https://www.arbookfind.com/default.as....

If you have any questions about this, please let Caroline or me know.

Re-reads
Re-reads are allowed in UNO but it has to be at LEAST SIX MONTHS since you read it before. Please make sure to double check if you are re-reading a book for this challenge.

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 871 comments Hi everyone! It's so nice to see some familiar faces, and to meet some new people. Pretty in Pink was one of my favorite movies when I was a teenager so I'm psyched that's our team name. Please introduce yourselves so we can learn a little bit more about each other.

My name is Jenny (I go by Jammin Jenny because I love music and there are SO many Jenny's on Goodreads), and I live in Maryland in the US, about 30 minutes from the beach. I'm hoping that COVID will be a little more under control this summer so I can go to the beach some more. I love reading and am on Goodreads most of the time. And I love reading almost any genre, but horror, mystery, suspense, and dystopian are probably my favorites.

I've had Caroline as captain before and I think she's great, so look forward to a fun time.

message 12: by Andrea (new)

Andrea (pilaryk2) | 134 comments Hello!
My name is Andrea, I am from Bogota, Colombia. I am mostly a city girl who enjoys reading and discussing books and movies.
I decided to join this challenge in order to push myself to read a little bit more this year and as an opportunity to discover new books and meeting other book aficionados.
I mostly read fantasy and science fiction but from time to time wander into some science/psychology books that grab my attention.
I am looking forward to hearing from you all and will be glad to get new book recommendations.

message 13: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 871 comments That's awesome! Welcome Andrea! I like science/psychology books too sometimes...it depends on my mood (ha because that's psychological).

message 14: by Beth (new)

Beth (jasonverlander) | 756 comments HELLO. Some familiar faces and some new ones as well which is always super exciting!

Is this the part where I introduce myself?

Uh my name is Beth. I like sports quite a lot. I also love true crime and watching people play video games (I myself really only play Among Us and Stardew Valley)

I’m 27 years old and I live in Michigan USA. I work at an assisted living facility (yay for working in healthcare during a pandemic!) but I love my job and love my residents.

My current obsession is listening to YouTube videos of rain and drinking smoothies.

I also babble a lot. Feel free to send me a friend request! I love making new friends. I’m excited to play with everyone :D

message 15: by Beth (new)

Beth (jasonverlander) | 756 comments Oh right we are supposed to talk about books too, right?

I love love love romance (the spicier and more embarrassing to read in public the better) and thrillers. I haven’t read YA as much lately but I do love a good YA. I want to get more into horror and speculative fiction.

message 16: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 871 comments Beth, it's funny I was listening to Rough, Raw and Ready (Rough Riders, #5) by Lorelei James which has a lot of erotica going on, and I had to make sure my daughter couldn't hear it...she's old enough but still..

Beth (jasonverlander) | 756 comments I was recently reading Take a Hint, Dani Brown with a friend and she told me she was reading a part of it in public and felt like she was doing something illegal 😂

Note to everyone that wants to read Talia Hibbert: (which you should btw) do not read them where others can see your reactions

Beth (jasonverlander) | 756 comments There is one scene in particular in Get a Life, Chloe Brown that I think of quite often 😂😂 she is an AMAZING author with characters that aren’t just super skinny white girls with blue eyes and perfect health. It’s refreshing and sexy as hell

Caroline (paper_moonshine) | 822 comments Hello everyone! My name is Caroline and I am super excited to be captaining a team again this year with the wonderful Jammin Jenny :D

I'm also in the U.S. in Tennessee, and like Andrea, I also read mostly science fiction and fantasy. I even started a website last year for my reviews (https://theworldsofsff.com/).

Caroline (paper_moonshine) | 822 comments Oh and everyone,

1) make sure to friend everyone on the team. This will make finding books for the reverse cards (books teammates have previously read) much easier :D

2) Create your UNO shelf for the year and post a link to it here. This will make it easier for Jammin' and I to keep track of them.

Anne (dagdvm) | 441 comments Hi, I’m Anne. I’m 69, living in Northern Virginia, although I’m originally from the U.K. I came over here as a nurse in 1982, went back to school to become a veterinarian and am now newly retired because of the COVID. I have two miniature long-haired dachshunds, two cats and one husband.
I took part in UNO last year and loved it. I read a wide variety of books. My condo is packed with books. They are in every room except the bathrooms. I have read a lot of them, but there are still many waiting for my attention. Yes, I have a book problem and UNO is part of the solution. (Actually, it is part of the problem also since I have been collecting possible UNO candidates for a few months now. Please don’t tell my hubby.) Biographies, science, nature, fiction are my favorites. I’m not too keen on fantasy, romance or detectives, but I never say never.
I can’t wait for the starting bell!

Lehar | 38 comments Hey everyone! I am Lehar from Bangalore, India. I used to read a lot as a kid and in my teens, and then not so much since I started working. Maybe a few books a year. But I am an ace book hoarder.

Then the pandemic hit. Not a good time, but a lot of spare time. So, I dived right into my hoard. Now I want to keep at it.

I like Sci-Fi, magical realism, historical fiction, speculative fiction, whodunit, and recently horror. Read Mexican Gothic last year. Found it super entertaining and now hunting for more like it.

Also, I watched Virgin River on Netflix, and though I'm no fan of romance, this one was made me gooey. Mid-life crisis, maybe. Guess I'll give the books a shot.

I am excited about this challenge and looking forward to meeting new people and discovering more genres and books.

I looove Brandon Sanderson, his ability to develop new magic systems and the way he weaves his stories draws me completely. I also enjoy Patrick Rothfuss, Michael J. Sullivan and N.K. Jemisin.
I have also liked the strange the dreamer series by Laini taylor and recently the invisible life of addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab.
These are just a few, it is pretty hard to select just some authors when there are so many books that leave images in my mind.

What about you? Any recommendations?

Carrie (carriele1216) | 439 comments Hi all! Carrie From Pennsylvania! This is my 3rd time playing Uno and I'm super excited for it to start!

I have 1 dog (a spoiled Westie) and 3 cats because my husband and daughter pick up strays and I can't seem to let them go once they are in the house.

I love football (and the Pittsburgh Steelers...although it ended on a down note sadly)! So now I'll say "Go Kansas City!"

My husband and 23 year old daughter are both into dirt bike racing, mainly enduro and woods racing, so we travel a good bit. Covid has put a damper on that this past year but hopefully looking forward to a better summer.

I am a huge fan of mysteries and thrillers but my favorite genre is Nordic Noir. I'll read just about anything though. Always love reading recommendations.

Looking forward to getting to know you all better and having a great Uno experience!

message 40: by Caroline (new)

Caroline (paper_moonshine) | 822 comments Welcome everyone! I'm happy to see that everyone is so excited to play :D Now that we have pretty much everyone here, lets get into the good stuff:

IMPORTANT: Our UNO strategy. PLEASE READ ME.

This is how we've kept track of what everyone was reading in previous years and it has been really helpful when putting the books into the spreadsheet. Basically everyone will post a comment with their "[insert month here] Reading Plan." You'll just say the books and all of the cards that work for each one (see my comment below).

The plan is not set in stone so don't worry if all you have is the first book you plan on reading. As the month progresses everyone will go back to their original comment to edit, add, and remove books. They will also post the date they finished the book (information we must have for the spreadsheet). Your book will not be entered into the spreadsheet until the read date is there. So don't worry if you don't get to a book on your planned reading list, if won't inconvenience us :D

It is very important you list all of the cards your book can work for. The more information we have on each book the easier it is to shift and cover all the cards, especially during the end of the month scramble. It is perfectly fine if your book only has one or two cards as a "to-read" and then you add the rest as you read/when the book is completed. The only cards that we are going to specifically claim are the color ones (see next message).

This way everyone's books and cards are in one place (instead of scattered throughout our chatting) and this will save a lot of time for captains when we go to fill in the spreadsheet. Of course, still feel free to talk about whatever books you are reading/have finished with the group if you would like :D

Please let us know if you have any questions :)

Caroline (paper_moonshine) | 822 comments February Color Card Tracker
Read: 5/10

Blue 2: The Lady and the Unicorn by Tracy Chevalier - Anne - Title - Read: 6
Blue 9: Sanctuary by Nora Roberts - Carrie - Author - Read: 5
Blue 9: The Midnight Library by Matt Haig - Bonnie - Character: Nora - Read:
Red 3: The 13 Treasures (Thirteen Treasures, #1) by Michelle Harrison - Preeti - Author - Read: 3
Red 5: The Henna Artist by Alka Joshi - Bonnie - Location: India - Read:
Yellow 1: Open City by Teju Cole - Anne - Title - Read: 14
Yellow 2: Reaper Man (Discworld, #11) by Terry Pratchett - Jenna - Author - Read:
Green 2: The Haunting by Paul Doherty - Carrie - Character: Thurston - Read: 2

Wild Draw 4
1. Red 3 - The Happy Couple by Samantha Hayes - Beth - Author - Read: 3
2. Red 5 - The Hypnotist (Joona Linna, #1) by Lars Kepler - Jenny - Character: Isabella - Read: 11

For our new players this means that your book must have a cover that is >50% of the required color and works for the number.

We also have 2 Wild Draw 4 cards. This means that we have to do two of the above colored cards twice. Each card can only be doubled once.

As I said above, your reading plan is not set in stone. However, if you have a book that works for a colored card, please keep in mind that finishing that book should be a reading priority as these are often our hardest cards to fill. If you need to drop your colored card, that is fine, but please let the team know ASAP.

I will keep track of our color cards in this post.

Bonnie Brandt (sparkgirl) | 39 comments Hi! My name is Bonnie. I live on the shores of Lake Superior in Northern Michigan. I am a medical technologist and work in a lab at a small rural hospital. My wife and I have two dogs. One is a career changed Leader Dog (he flunked out) and the other is a future Leader Dog in training. I like kayaking, swimming, hiking and traveling (oh 2020 how I loathe you, although I am an introvert so perhaps I'm a little divided on my feelings) and enjoy cooking and baking.

I will read just about anything and love suggestions for all different kinds of books which is just one of the reason why I like Goodreads so much. I read about a 60/40 split of non-fiction/ fiction. I like to read classic fiction and whatever current that catches my eye. As for non-fiction I like history, science (especially medical, and especially brain and behavioral science) and social justice books.

I have never played UNO before and though I've read all of the rules and hints I don't really think I have a firm grasp on it yet. I think it will gel once I see it in progress.
