Quite possibly The Bridge. That features crossing a bridge when the main character needs to get home. I don't remember it being New York, but it could well have been. Society has become extremely environmentally sensitive where nobody speaks in case it disturbs animals, they all wear special suits to avoid contamination through their breath etc. and nobody would ever kill anything, even an insect.
Richard, around what year did you read this book? A range of years is fine.
Can you tell us more about the main character - e.g., age, why they need to get to New Jersey, job, how the person survives? Was NYC just recently destroyed and how?

Andy's suggestion of The Bridge by D. Keith Mano sounds like your book. There are different cover images.
One reviewer says, "It's a classic apocalyptic dystopia, a road novel through the last dregs of civilization in New York and North Jersey".
One request for this book mentions: "The plot is about society committing mass suicide to save the planet. The main character has been released from prison so he can travel home to die there. He travels across Manhattan (I think) and reaches the George Washington Bridge to find it collapsed." https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
Another request for this book mentions: "People are forbidden to farm or use any part of nature for sustenance and barely survive on food pills. In fact, the regime in power has decided to return the Earth to nature and has the mass suicide of the human race scheduled for about three weeks in the future, where everyone takes a poison pill and just dies." https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
