What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

I read, many years ago, a novel which extrapolated concerns about eating animals to plants and all food was reduced to just consuming pills. As the City was mostly destroyed, the main character needed to get to New Jersey by crossing the George Washington Bridge. The bridge had been destroyed and all that was left were the large cables which went from the end up to the top of the towers. The character had to cross by climbing the cable.

Any idea what the name of the book was?

Quite possibly The Bridge. That features crossing a bridge when the main character needs to get home. I don't remember it being New York, but it could well have been. Society has become extremely environmentally sensitive where nobody speaks in case it disturbs animals, they all wear special suits to avoid contamination through their breath etc. and nobody would ever kill anything, even an insect.
