More details: Merlin recruits the MC through a want ad. There are redcaps who are bikers. Nymphs who live at a mall. The MC uses symbols of "order" to fight magical creatures like computer hardware and lasers. One last detail... I think the authors name ends in W, X, Y or Z. I remember I was looking for Weiss and Hickman when I found it on a library shelf. It was around the year 2000.

Daniel, is this book for adults or teens?
What's the location?
I added some details to the header/topic title. You can update it by clicking the small "edit" link after the header. This only works on the full Desktop website - not the Mobile website or app. (On the Mobile website, click the "Desktop version" link at the bottom of the page.)

I would say it was geared more towards teens, but not kids. It was set in a modern American city, but I don't remember what city, nondescript, it wasn't an important part of the story. LA, etc. Oh, I also think the MC had a sidekick who was supposed to be Puck, he's sort of comic relief?
Oh man, I had an epiphany, and the title came to me! It was called A Logical Magician, by Robert Weinberg (I was on track with the author name!) Sorry to open this up just to close it again. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...
