Thorn (thornontherose) | 111 comments Lorien followed, Lenna situated comfortably on his back. The Sky Rider sharpened her throwing stars, perfecting each edge to a deadly point.

Thorn (thornontherose) | 111 comments "Where do you think they're headed?" Lenna asked.
"Away from us." Lori replied.
"Well thank you Captain Obvious. But really, where?"
Lori caught an updraft. "I dunno. They'll probably try to stop and camp for the night soon, or maybe there's a small settlement out here somewhere."
"I doubt it but I wouldn't be surprised. About the settlement, I mean."
She flipped in her seat and laid back against Lori's neck.
"Don't fall asleep." He warned.
"You know I couldn't even if I wanted to."
They fell silent and Lenna stared up at the clouds.

Thorn (thornontherose) | 111 comments Lorien was able to swerve and miss most of the rocks but several of them cut into his wing, two of them even tore small holes. She cried out and Lenna sat up straight. "Lori!" Lenna's anger had started to fade but now it was back, and she was pissed. She grabbed a couple throwing stars and threw them at Erlirrilth as she descended, aiming to emend them in her wings.
The Sky Rider snapped her attention back to her dragon. They were losing altitude. Lorien was trying desperately to keep them level but she kept dipping and swerving as he tried to fly with an injured wing. Eventually Lori landed sloppily in the trees, not far from Erlirrilth. Lenna slipped off her dragon and grabbed the medical kit strapped to the saddle. She rushed over to Lori's wing and started tending to the wounds, seething the entire time.

Thorn (thornontherose) | 111 comments Lenna smeared an earthy smelling salve on Lori's wing then covered the cuts and tears with a small but strong bandage. Lori's scales had turned a deep shade or green to match the forest around him but the bandage stuck out like a sore thumb. Lenna wanted to punch something. No, she wanted to punch Sethen. Very, very hard. In the face.
The Sky Rider stroked Lorien's neck. "Get some rest. I'll be right back." She whispered.
The dragon curled up in a tight ball at the base of a tree without protest, hiding her injured wing and the bandages on it.
Lenna watched as his breathing deepen and slow then turned and started through the trees in the direction she'd seen Erlirrilth land. After a few minutes, Lenna came upon a small open space where Sethen sat with a book and Solila and Erlirrilth stood looking around. Lenna silently climbed a tree nearby, easily finding footholds in the knotted bark. She perched on a thick branch and watched the group. She was very tempted to throw a star at Sethen right then, but resisted the urge. Instead she held the throwing star in her hand, flipping it through her fingers.

message 5: by Thorn (new)

Thorn (thornontherose) | 111 comments Lenna slipped out of the tree and followed. She kept her distance but stayed close. Her hood was up and she moved through the trees like a ghost, sticking to shadows.

message 6: by Thorn (new)

Thorn (thornontherose) | 111 comments Lenna kept up easily. The cold was biting but she ignored it. Her clothing was plenty warm enough and while it didn’t keep out all the cold, Lenna preferred it that way.
When Solila fell asleep, Lenna moved in closer. She was trailing a about dozen feet behind Sethen, just to the right of Erlirrilth’s tail.

message 7: by Thorn (last edited Feb 24, 2021 04:22PM) (new)

Thorn (thornontherose) | 111 comments Lenna froze mid step as the dragon’s whip-like tail flicked in front of her. She pinwheeled her arms to keep from falling forward until Erlirrilth’s tail swung back in the other direction. After that Lenna kept much farther to the right, not wanting to give herself away by tripping over the dragon’s tail.
At Sethen’s words Lenna decided she couldn’t wait any longer to make a move. She drew a throwing star and threw it at Sethen’s shoulder. Then, knowing Solila wouldn’t stay asleep if Sethen cried out, she threw another star at Erlirrilth’s right wing where it connected with her shoulder.

message 8: by Thorn (new)

Thorn (thornontherose) | 111 comments "Don’t let your boyfriend hurt mine." Lenna shot back, an equal amount of venom in her voice. She knew Sethen wasn’t Solila’s boyfriend but she didn’t care. She was mad and someone needed to pay.

message 9: by Thorn (new)

Thorn (thornontherose) | 111 comments "I’m the insane one?" Lenna asked as she stared at Solila. "You’re the one running around killing people, burning houses down, stealing." She flicked another pair of throwing stars into her hands. "What the hell happened to you? I mean, I always thought you were kind of a jerk but-" Lenna broke off as Solila sent a fireball hurtling towards her head and she ducked and rolled out of the way. "But you were never that bad." She finished, standing up.

message 10: by Thorn (last edited Feb 24, 2021 06:51PM) (new)

Thorn (thornontherose) | 111 comments "Okay, but you don’t have to. No one’s forcing you to kill anyone. You could be done with that. Settle down with Erlirrilth and get out of everyone’s hair." Lenna suggested, knowing it was unlikely the rouge Sky Rider would ever do that.

message 11: by Thorn (last edited Feb 24, 2021 07:02PM) (new)

Thorn (thornontherose) | 111 comments "Uh, I don’t know, you don’t have innocent people’s blood on your hands?" Lenna sidestepped the flame and this time she threw a star of her own, aiming the blade towards Solila’s stomach. She had to admit it: Lenna was enjoying this. She only ever got to fight with Solila in sparring and even then there was always some guard or instructor hanging over their shoulders.

message 12: by Thorn (new)

Thorn (thornontherose) | 111 comments "I have a question for you." Lenna said conversationally, as if they both didn’t really want to kill each other. "Did you do it? Start the fire in that woodland village, I mean." She knew this would earn her another fireball aimed at her face but Lenna didn’t care.

message 13: by Thorn (new)

Thorn (thornontherose) | 111 comments She cursed and batted at her sleeve, suffocating the fire that had started there. The flame had licked the skin along her upper left arm and shoulder and it burned enough to bring tears to her eyes. Lenna gritted her teeth against the pain, refusing to let the tears fall. She grabbed another throwing star in her right hand and faced Solila.
"Okay." She said, her voice surprisingly steady. "Have you talked to the Princess recently?" Lenna bit back a smirk. She knew Solila and the Princess Shreya had been very close and she was honestly curious if that friendship had lasted.

message 14: by Thorn (new)

Thorn (thornontherose) | 111 comments "How nice of you." Lenna replied sarcastically. She flattened herself to the ground, letting the flame fly over her head. "Any other interesting updates on your life I should know about?" She asked as she stood up. Lenna casually threw another throwing star at Solila, acting like she was merely throwing an apple or something equally as harmless.

message 15: by Thorn (new)

Thorn (thornontherose) | 111 comments "Hmm." Lenna said. She leaned casually against a tree and balanced a throwing star on the tip of her finger. "What about your eyes earlier? Why were they red? And why were you acting so.... happy?"

message 16: by Thorn (new)

Thorn (thornontherose) | 111 comments Lenna picked up on the defensiveness in her voice and smirked. She spun the throwing star on her finger and stared straight ahead at Solila, waiting for her to attack again.

message 17: by Thorn (new)

Thorn (thornontherose) | 111 comments ((Question: Do all Sky Riders have control over fire? Or just Solila?))

message 18: by Thorn (last edited Feb 24, 2021 09:23PM) (new)

Thorn (thornontherose) | 111 comments ((Okay, thanks))

Lenna’s eyes widened in panic and she threw herself to the ground. She felt the wave of heat pass over her, tensing even more as one of the orbs flew dangerously close to her head. Once all the flames had passed, Lenna rolled to her feet. The burn on her shoulder, which had started to dull, reignited with pain as it remembered the scorching heat. Lenna gasped and stepped back into the shadows of the trees where Solila wouldn’t be able to see her, taking a moment to recover.

message 19: by Thorn (new)

Thorn (thornontherose) | 111 comments No. Lenna thought fiercely. She’s not getting away. Not after we got so close.
Lorien picked up on these thoughts and he stood up, shaking out her wings. His injured wing had had time to heal as she slept and, while it wasn’t completely back to normal, he could now stay balanced as he flew. Lori took off and swooped through the trees, catching up to them in a fraction of the time it had taken Lenna to walk the same distance. She landed silently behind Lenna, blending in with the trees. The Sky Rider leaned against her dragon, unconsciously camouflaging her own clothes and skin at the same time.

message 20: by Thorn (last edited Feb 24, 2021 09:44PM) (new)

Thorn (thornontherose) | 111 comments Lorien silently used her wings to scoop up Lenna and set her on his back. Lenna was unconscious as Lorien laid her down on the saddle. They were both still camouflaged and when Erlirrilth took off, Lori followed, knowing that’s what her rider would want him to do.

message 21: by Thorn (new)

Thorn (thornontherose) | 111 comments ((Yep, same. We should probably wait for Sethen anyway. XD Bye!))

message 22: by Thorn (new)

Thorn (thornontherose) | 111 comments Lorien stayed just above the clouds, making it easier for both her and Lenna — who was still unconscious — to camouflage with the sky.

Thorn (thornontherose) | 111 comments Lorien landed on a smaller ledge below the cave. It wasn't very big but it was able to comfortably hold both Lenna and Lori. The dragon let Lenna slide off his back. She would wake her up in a bit, but right now, Lenna needed to sleep.
Lorien climbed up the side of the mountain, double checking that his scales had camouflaged with the mountain. She stopped next to the mouth of Solila's cave and listened, trying to pick up some form of conversation from the people inside.

message 27: by Thorn (last edited Feb 25, 2021 01:53PM) (new)

Thorn (thornontherose) | 111 comments Lorien returned to the ledge where Lenna slept and nudged her gently with his snout. Lenna's eyes flew open and she was on her feet in the next second. Lori shushed her before she could ask where they were and then proceeded to explain what had happened after she went unconscious. She explained that Solila, Erlirrilth, and Sethen were sleeping in the cave above them.
Lenna nodded and unsaddled Lori then told the iridescent dragon to get some sleep, she needed to think. As Lori curled up and closed his eyes, Lenna grabbed the medical kit and sat down on the edge of the ledge, letting her feet dangle over the edge. She rolled up her dark purple sleeve and applied a salve to her burnt shoulder, then wrapped the burn in gauze. Lenna packed the medical kit back into the saddle and returned to the edge. She stared up at the stars that were slowly appearing as the sky slowly faded to black.

message 28: by Thorn (last edited Feb 25, 2021 10:11AM) (new)

Thorn (thornontherose) | 111 comments Lenna startled as Solila's feet interrupted her view of the stars. She held in a laugh and camouflaged herself so she wouldn't be seen if either Sethen or Solila looked over the edge. She listened silently to their conversation.

message 29: by Thorn (new)

Thorn (thornontherose) | 111 comments Lenna stood up and stepped back, pressing herself up against the mountain to avoid being seen.

message 30: by Thorn (new)

Thorn (thornontherose) | 111 comments Lenna woke Lori and gestured for her to stay quiet. She gathered their meager supplies and saddled Lorien. Lenna climbed on the dragon's back and Lori took off after Lenna triple checked they were camouflaged.

message 31: by Thorn (last edited Feb 25, 2021 08:27PM) (new)

Thorn (thornontherose) | 111 comments Lorien flew behind them, farther above the clouds. Lenna entertained herself by experimenting with her camouflage. She concentrated hard on her hand, turning it a vibrant shade of bright pink. The rider smiled triumphantly then quickly returned her hand to the camouflaged color of the sky, not wanting to be noticed by Sethen or Solila.

message 32: by Thorn (last edited Feb 27, 2021 03:24PM) (new)

Thorn (thornontherose) | 111 comments Lenna had food of her own. She kept some in a pack at the back of her saddle. She retrieved said pack and opened it, revealing fruit and dried meat. Lenna took out an apple and a few pieces of meat. She didn't want to diminish their supply of saved food, it was strictly for emergencies only. The Sky Rider took a piece of meat and tossed it front of Lori. The dragon surged forward and caught it in her mouth. The next time Lenna threw two pieces and Lorien caught both. She returned the food pack to it's place on her saddle then bit into the apple, a smile on her face as she tossed the last piece of meat for Lori, who caught it without hesitation.
Lenna spotted Mirfield in the distance. She leaned forward and patted the side of Lorien's neck. "We'll rest soon, okay?" She thought. The dragon nodded.

message 33: by Thorn (new)

Thorn (thornontherose) | 111 comments Lorien threw his wings up vertically, letting the wind sweep her back. He circled the area she had last seen Erlirrilth. Lenna searched with him, urging her to go lower into the clouds.

message 34: by Thorn (last edited Feb 26, 2021 08:21PM) (new)

Thorn (thornontherose) | 111 comments Lenna growled in frustration. She knew it was pointless to continue to search for them so she gestured for Lori to land. The dragon spiraled down to the ground, flying low until she found a thick tree, large enough and steady enough to support both Lenna’s and Lorien’s weight. Lenna slid off the saddle and leaned back against one of the branches. She tilted her head back and closed her eyes.
Lori moved over to her, moving carefully as to not brake the branch. He nudged her rider with his head and Lenna wrapped her arms around Lori’s scaly neck, finding comfort in the familiar embrace. In return, the dragon wrapped one of her wings around Lenna, knowing she needed the support.

message 35: by Thorn (last edited Feb 27, 2021 03:23PM) (new)

Thorn (thornontherose) | 111 comments Lenna pulled back from Lori shared her thoughts out loud. "I think they were heading towards Mirfield. We could try to make it there before they do but we’d have to fly fast, without stopping."
"What makes you think that?" Lori asked.
"The direction they were flying. Mirfield is the only town in that area so the chances are pretty high that that’s where they’re headed."
Lorien nodded and Lenna got back on the saddle. The dragon jumped out of the tree and took off, flying in a tight circle then turning towards Mirfield.

message 36: by Thorn (last edited Feb 27, 2021 03:22PM) (new)

Thorn (thornontherose) | 111 comments Lorien flew towards Mirfield, fast but not quite at top speed. Both he and Lenna were camouflaged against the sky, making them invisible to anyone looking up from the ground.

message 37: by Thorn (new)

Thorn (thornontherose) | 111 comments ((Yeah, I know. But Lenna doesn’t know that.))

message 38: by Thorn (last edited Feb 28, 2021 06:22PM) (new)

Thorn (thornontherose) | 111 comments Lorien flew farther up into the clouds, getting a wider view of the land below. Lenna watched the trees sweep by until she spotted Marfolk coming up below them.
"How about this," She asked Lori. "We stop in Marfolk for a day or two, resupply, rest, then return to Isongend? I need a break from this chase."
"Sounds great."
The dragon replied. "As long as I can sleep through our time in Marfolk."
Lenna chuckled then nodded in agreement. "You got it. Just get us there first."
Lorien smiled slightly and kept flying.

message 39: by Thorn (new)

Thorn (thornontherose) | 111 comments They came up on the town and Lori dove towards the ground. He circled around the city twice before moving in closer to land.
