In the Boxall 1000 spreadsheet, there are notations about some listed books such as "deleted 2008." Do we disregard those notes? Any book title on the list is okay?
Owlette wrote: "In the Boxall 1000 spreadsheet, there are notations about some listed books such as "deleted 2008." Do we disregard those notes? For non-Western bonus points: Rudyard Kipling was born in India but was an Englishman; Isabel Allende was born in Lima, Peru but presently lives in America. I'm sure authors can be found who were born in America but now live in a non-western country. Does the bonus points only go to authors who are born in AND live(d) in non-Western countries?

It is born in and citizen of. Neither of those authors qualify for Non-Western.
Well, I'm glad Deedee commented. I missed it was both and was keeping an Asimov in mind for when other tasks were listed. Thank you for the clarification.
Connie, this doesn't work for Crime, which must be a woman author.A Study in Scarlet by Arthur Conan Doyle

Thanks for catching it, Elizabeth.
Thank you for posting the polls! I have a question about poll 1, "A Round Tuit". Does the book have to fit one task that has appeared in two different challenges (the same task), or can it be two different tasks from two different challenges?
It is two tasks from two challenges. It's the two challenges that is the important part because, let's admit it, we do repeat tasks, so technically, it could be the same task from two seasons. It's for any book you keep planning to read, but never get around to it.
If Brooklyn Public Library doesn't have a copy of a book how is it decided if it's young adult? It also doesn't have a lexile score...The book I am looking at is UnEnchanted
Sarah wrote: "If Brooklyn Public Library doesn't have a copy of a book how is it decided if it's young adult? It also doesn't have a lexile score..."If BPL doesn't shelve the title, we don't look for the Lexile. BPL has only the ebook of that title, so you're in luck.
If I was to read The Cider House Rules, which MPE do I choose for jumbo scoring. It seems to keep coming up with the large print edition.
Valerie wrote: "If I was to read The Cider House Rules, which MPE do I choose for jumbo scoring. It seems to keep coming up with the large print edition."I'm glad you asked. No, not the large print edition, but this one with 621 pages: The Cider House Rules. Still jumbo points.
The current leader in the poll for task 10.1 is read a book by an author you enjoyed last season. If this wins then does the book (author) you enjoyed have to have been claimed for RwS or would any book you read between December and February count? And, does it have to be a book you started and finished during the season? Thank you.
Any book you read during the season. You should have finished it during the season. None of us is going to check your shelves, though.

Yes. Thanks. I thought it would be the one with 621 pgs, but thought I should check!
Should we hold off on posting anything until all the tasks are updated so we don't miss combo opportunities?
Kim wrote: "Should we hold off on posting anything until all the tasks are updated so we don't miss combo opportunities?"You can post anytime. We'll try to catch combos for you. We won't start recording posts for a few days yet, though.
Not sure this is the right place for this question, but has anyone seen the new Beta update? It doesn't look like you'll be able to see MPG or at least the number of people who tagged something a certain genre.
Kim wrote: "Not sure this is the right place for this question, but has anyone seen the new Beta update? The number of people who shelved a genre was one of the things I begged them to retain. There are other things. I do not use that view. As yet, there is no way to access the librarian links, among other things that are not user-friendly.
Both of these questions relate to the non-western style....1. My understanding is that the author must be born in AND reside in a non-Western country. Is this correct?
2. I've read just enough to confuse myself..... Is Albania just considered a country that was 'Soviet dominated' or do we consider it (formly) a part of the USSR?

It is born and citizen/resident of. Citizenship is given preference, so if, for example, an author born in Russia moves permanently to Germany but retains Russian citizenship, that author would still be considered non-western.
No, Albania is not one of the formerly USSR countries. They are (and I have a cheat sheet, because I often can't remember):
Armenia
Azerbaijan
Belarus
Estonia
Georgia
Kazakhstan
Kyrgyzstan
Latvia
Lithuania
Moldova
Russia
Tajikistan
Turkmenistan
Ukraine
Uzbekistan

Thanks!
Elizabeth (Alaska) wrote: "I edited my post after your "thanks" and maybe I've made things clearer."Yes, the list is good. I started reading about Albania becoming a (communist) republic and it's relationship with the Soviet republic and fell into the rabbit hole... ha, ha.
And that's why I have a cheat sheet! Because I have to ask such things asDo Hungary and Yugoslavia qualify?
I'm pretty sure my score should be 280 (by post 250) rather than 285 (I don't see a note from Kate giving me an extra 5 pts).
If there is a book that is only an audible book with no pages, how do we count the length of the book?
Rebekah wrote: "If there is a book that is only an audible book with no pages, how do we count the length of the book?"Please provide an example. Goodreads has restrictions on Audible Only, where some are allowed and some not.
Elizabeth! I knew you needed that, and I just came back to add it but you had beat me to it! (smile)Wild Swan: A Story of Florence Nightingale by Patti Callahan
I found a length for that on Amazon and have added it to the record. Unfortunately, it is only 2 hours (actually 1:54) and not long enough to qualify for this task. Our FAQ says:For audio books without a print edition, the audio book must be at least 3 hours long.
Please can I check if I can claim style points for these two books:Plats Du Jour, or Foreign Food
They Can't Ration These
Both are cookbooks, but they are old-style and almost solid text, with just occasional line drawings. As well as recipes, the first one contains a lot about cooking methods and equipment in French, Italian and other European traditional cuisines. The second one contains information about foraging for and growing food.

Yes. Please remind us when you post that I acknowledged as such.
(and thanks for reposting in the right thread!)

Thank you! And ha ha yes for a minute I thought it was still winter :)
Oh, help. I was trying to reconcile my posts with the Readerboard, and when I went through all my posts I found a bunch of combos I didn't claim. I never did figure out where the extra 5 points came from, but I found 25 I hadn't claimed. Message 35 - Magruder's Curiosity Cabinet combo 20.3 (there are two main characters, one is male - the author is female). +5
Message 36 - The Duke and I combo 20.10 - the Bridgerton series is all about family +5
Message 46 - Call Your Daughter Home combo 20.10 - definitely a family saga (multiple households, multiple generations) +5
Message 60 - Trials and Tribulations combo 20.10 - definitely a family saga (multiple households, multiple generations) +5
Message 288 - The Christmas Swap combo 20.10 - definitely a family saga (multiple households) +5
If you approve these, I'll add a copy of this message to the Completed Tasks, if that works.
Thanks! Kim
Yes. You can just post this as a new post in the completed tasks thread. In case you didn't know, just a straight copy/paste doesn't work - all your books will link as Harry Potter. But you can edit/copy/cancel edit and then paste and it will work.
Apologies if this is set out somewhere - I've looked but haven't found it.........how do we know whether a book with either a low Lexile, or shelved as YA, is grandfathered in and therefore allowed for styles, or a 15 point task?

I haven't published our entire book list - we currently have over 16,000 books! There is a list of Agatha Christie. You are always free to ask and I never mind checking for you.

Ok! Thanks! I’ll wait for mother one of those short read tasks then.

Thanks, Elizabeth. I was hoping there was a way that didn't involve you having to do more work!
But maybe I shouldn't have worried as you obviously have a crystal ball - the book I was thinking of is a Christie And Then There Were None, which is on your linked list and therefore eligible (if I've understood correctly).
The list includes all books by Christie that members have read. There is a column on the right side that has the Lexile if it applies. And Then There Were None is on the list, but with a Lexile of 570, so you could use it for RwS this season, but without styles.(I could suggest your saving it for summer, but mum's the word.)
