Hey folks!
So, last night at the Classic Lit book club, we started talking about doing a reading of a Shakespeare play on Zoom. (Which I still might do!) But then I thought we should read Shakespeare in the park this summer! But here's the first question I need to answer. (I have at least a half dozen more, but let's start here.)

Do you want to read a whole play together in the park or do you want to read a bunch of different scenes? (And if it's a whole play, which one?)

The idea would be just regular folks reading the roles, and I would do my best to add some context and explanation of what's happening. What do you all think?

Shelia

Shelia, I think any sort of reading together would be great fun. :) That said, my vote would be for a whole play, since then we could have a better feel for the characters and progress of the action (especially with your literary guidance!). I am a total Shakespeare novice, so I would be happy with anything. (I have only read Julius Caesar, obviously, and A Midsummer Night's Dream. When everyone was talking about Shakespeare in high school, I was wracking my brain but can't actually recall reading any in English class!)

Thanks for all you do and for running with fun new ideas! :)

Selena Pigoni (sailorstar165) | 48 comments I would prefer the whole play, but scenes would probably be easier to scale... and we could do a few different plays to span the genres that way.

That said, I'm game for any play, but I think I'd prefer a comedy or tragedy to one of the histories.

Thanks for weighing in! If we did a full play, I have a handful I'm thinking about, and yeah, none of them are histories, simply because so many of them are really dude-heavy. And I want to to one with a lot of name recognition.

New question: If we do a bunch of Shakespeare programming in April around his birthday, will it be too much Bard to read plays in the park over the summer as well? Or can there never be too much Shakespeare?

Ryan I'm new to the group, but I'd be interested in participating in a reading, whether it would be online or in the park. I'd be up for any play or combination of plays..I can't think of anything by Shakespeare that I haven't enjoyed!

First of all, welcome! Second, I love your enthusiasm for Shakespeare. :) Thanks so much for weighing in.

There's definitely going to be a reading. I'll be back with details....soon!

Never too much Shakespeare in my opinion. :)

Shakespeare in the Park is THIS SUNDAY!!!! We're reading Much Ado About Nothing. If you'd like to be one of the players, be sure to sign up. Otherwise, just turn up at Price Park at 2 pm Sunday. We'll be in Pavilion #2.
