You ever read two or three lines said by one character and just KNOW they're gonna be your favourite? Cause it happens to me all the time. There are just some character tropes that I have an incredible weakness for. For me, the big ones are:

- "My sad backstory has turned me emo, wait no how dare you joke with me, stop it, I don't have feelings, no I'm not blushing" (bonus point if they're a: a rival to the main character and they're foils to each other and/or b: coupled or at least shipped with a bright and cheerful character)
- "I've been cracking jokes this entire book but underneath I'm actually very insecure and emotional"
- "I'm not on your side or on their side, I'm just here to mess with people and eat popcorn"
- "Bad boy? No, not me. I like drinking tea and having pretty hair and I like being gentle and kind to others. I've painted this picture to deal with my emotions, there are flowers on it." (when will i get a book with this kind of love interest, please)
- "You're my sworn rival, it is my royal duty to flirt with you until you die of embarrassment"

There's probably more, but these...these get me good.

Those are literally the best characters. With the first one a million books with characters like that just rushed in my head. And yes authors always go for the “bad boys” when will their just be a sweet cute love interest!

for me it's like
- 'I'm obsessed with and really good at this super specific thing, so I use it to cope with all my worldly problems'
- or 'I'm sassy and confident all the time, which I use so I can't get close to people, but I still end up getting to like people and then I care way too much'

I'm always weak for the innocent cinnamon rolls, the funny and sarcastic guys, and the powerful and cute female side characters

all very solid picks so far yes yes

The comic relief with sad past always gets me, man. Maybe because that's totally me, haha...ha...

I also like the enthusiastic bright spirited scientiests, but you're right, I can't really think of any book character right now. Maybe I'm just dumb though. The only one I can think of is Ema Skye from Ace Attorney, and that's a game...

Well you'll be glad to know that Ema Skye is also a goofy character with a sad past, but that one's pretty common in the game. It's overall a pretty fun game series. I'd almost argue Edgeworth counts as "person that hates everyone but one person", once he starts warming up to at least one character.
