Somehow, I missed out on reading this book when I was younger, although I know I would have loved it had I read it. This book follows the story of Cassandra Mortmain who lives an isolated life in near-poverty with her eccentric family in a ruined castle in the Suffolk countryside. The castle is like another character, and we follow the family over a six-month period as Cassandra learns lessons about love, dealing with adversity and growing up, and a rich American family moves to a nearby estate. A couple of Cassandra’s diary entries were a bit long-winded, and I felt that her thoughts on religion were out of place in the book. The one thing that stopped this being a 5-star read for me was the ending. I like everything to be neatly tied up and to know what happens to all of the characters, but the ending to this book was left up to the interpretation of the reader.

I really love this book. The only thing that disappointed me was not getting to experience The Cat Sat on the Mat in its entirety.
