I'm not very fancy with my Goodreads shelves but they get the job done. I have "want to read," "read," "no thanks," and readathon shelves. The no thanks are books that are by authors who've done something really bad so that I know not to read those books and I only do readathon shelves if the Goodreads moderators in a group turn on the shelf feature for a readathon.
I also don't create many shelves but now I have started doing it because I realized it's easy to recommend books that way, when you have everything sorted, so now I have year wise shelves, which need to be read soon, and favorites of genres like hist-rom_fav, and such.
I also have DNF shelf for books I dnfed, and another called failed_mysteries, unexpected_fav..

I have really weird and totally on a impulse done shelving. I tag my books according to genres and age group like ya fantasy/ fiction, adult fantasy/fiction, mystery, historical fiction etc. Then I have on my fav tropes like found family or my favorite otps. And of course I have a shelf dedicated to all my book boyfriends. It's full chaos but my own system of sorting.
Mine are crazy! I've got shelves for everything almost. I also use them to help me track new releases so I know when to grab them.
Oh I have lots of shelves too. I've split my tbr into definitely and maybe. I've got a section for short stories that is still separate because sometimes authors use short stories to track their fan base's interest level and to justify a new book. I have lots of genre shelves and a few fandom shelves. Having lots of shelves helps me find books quicker when I have thousands included.
Dividing the tbr as definitely and maybe does sound really useful. I am gonna try this. My tbr has grown so long that it's difficult to keep track of it now.
Yeah and I'm obsessive enough to make the multiple tbrs, dnf, and short stories all exclusive so they don't impact my read count. :)

So that I can tag some with read now.
But I wonder if your idea would work better.
I have a question. :)
So let's just say you don't want to read a book, so you move it to a shelf called "never-reading", but when you add the shelf it shows up in your list as "want to read."
Can you add a book to a shelf without making it "currently reading, read, or want to read"?
Thanks!

Go to "My Books" to get to your bookshelves. On that page Underneath the slightly bigger "My Books" link you'll see "Bookshelves (Edit)"
Click on "(Edit)".
Type the shelf name you want to add and click add. It will pop up in your list. Find it and then change it to " exclusive"
Thanks for saying that!! I forgot to say that's for desktop!I was trying to see if you can do it in the app. All I found was GR official page and I don't think so.

Yeah I also like using the sticky feature to keep my favourites shelf at the top and I put double zeds in front of shelf names that I want to put to the bottom.
