Justin mentioned over in the Hobbit thread that he was doing a Walk to Mordor challenge, and a few of us expressed interest. I figured we should start a new thread to discuss our updates, so that we're not interrupting literary discussions with our fitness updates.

for those looking for a means of tracking your steps, Google has an app called Google Fit. it uses your smart phone's accelerometer to measure physical activity throughout the day. of course, if you don't carry your phone with you, I could see the appeal of buying a separate pedometer.then I measured my gait the old fashioned way - by taking 10 steps and measuring how far I walked with a tape measurer. then I set up a Google doc to convert my daily steps into miles.
So far I'm at 10 miles. still in the Shire. if anything, this challenge will give us a more accurate sense of Middle Earth distances than the films were able to do.
If you need the spreadsheet to keep track of where you are the link is here http://www.nerdfitness.com/blog/2012/.... I have a couple weeks head start so Im 40 miles in ( around the first run in with the Black Rider after running into Merry and Pippin. I just got a fitbit and it works great Since starting the challenge I'm already down 5 pounds.
yeah, I wrote down my weight yesterday because I felt like a fatty (not Fredegar Bolger, mind you) after stuffing my face during the super bowl. hopefully this will help me get in better shape.
I'm sitting at about 18. Rod, do you have a smart phone? if so, Google fit is a free app, and it will track your steps in the background. Or if not, you don't necessarily have to get the pricey fancy schmancy ones; I just bought one for my wife on Amazon for $10. the Omron HJ-321.
Apparently my phone has been keeping track of my steps. When do I get to start and how many steps in a mile?
You can start whenever you wants and the number of steps in a mile is different for everybody because of gait and stride. Supposedly 10,000 steps is 5 miles but it's only 4 and some change for me. You need an app that will tell you the miles too.
I started tracking mine the very end of January, but Justin has been tracking for a while. Step to mile ratio depends on your height, length of legs, etc. either estimate it at 2.5 feet per step (which is about average), or take 10 steps down a hallway and measure how far you walked.
This is a book club not a math class. Why are you people trying to get me use my brain? It is my day off. Movie and comic day. Not math.
haha, I'm sure there's an app that converts it to miles. then you just have to walk, and no math is required.
Good news guys. My phone already did it for me. I can maintain my current level of inactivity. Gonna start it from a month ago. Now to see how far I've made it
im at mile 50 as of today. 12 Files to Farmer Maggots House and 19 Miles to Buckleberry Ferry!
I just arrived at Farmer Maggots House. On to the Ferry!
Made it past Buckleberry Ferry and am currently at Crickhollow !
Nah, Farmer Maggot is a good guy. Frodo just had childhood trauma brought on by his guilt for stealing his crops.
I just met Gildor and the other elves the other day; I hope to get to Farmer Maggot's in the next few days.
I reached Farmer Maggot's field. I'm at 67 miles as of yesterday. I should get to Buckleberry Ferry today.
I'm at 115 miles and Frodo sings, Tom rescues and recalls ponies. Leave about 10 a.m. Tom leads.
