Pickees
✱ To help your picker understand the type of books you like or are currently reading, please make sure your ‘read’ shelf is up to date. You can create shelves for books you DNFed (Did Not Finish) or authors that don’t work for you as well as favorite books and authors. In addition, you might consider updating your profile. You can include info about your favorite books, authors, genres, themes or tropes (or themes/tropes you dislike – i.e. secret baby).
✱ Please do not specify likes/dislikes in the sign-up thread. This information will not be included in the pairings and your pickee may not see your message and does not need to rely on that information when making picks.
Pickers
✱ Please remember this is primarily a romance readers group. Thus, most, if not all, of your picks should be romance. There are various sub genres within the romance category - Contemporary, Historical, Paranormal, Romantic Suspense, Erotica, M/M, Urban Fantasy. If your pickee reads a wide variety, you could add a non-romance as a choice.
✱ You will be using 8 picking rules to select books for you pickee. Choose at least 4 new titles for your pickee. These can be brand new to them (not found on any of their shelves) or a book found on their shelves if they've never read any of the author's work previously. The remaining 4 titles should come from your pickee's tbr, with a minimum of one from their preferred shelves if provided. Be sure to pick at least one book for each picking rule, but please limit your picks to no more than two books per rule as sometimes having too many options is worse than too few.
✱ Please remember when you are giving new recommendations, you are not limited to titles that you have read. You can choose books that are new releases, on your tbr, or titles you looked up on Goodreads or Amazon that you think your pickee would enjoy.
A few hints to help with book selection:
✱ Check the book’s publishing date. Select "date pub" from the checkbox selections and save.
✱ Check pickee's personalized shelves, especially their exclusive shelves. A personalized shelf is one the member has created. (e.g., 'to read next', 'favorites' ‘didn’t like’)
✱ Make sure the books you choose are not on their 'read' shelf. Just because it isn't rated doesn't mean it wasn't read.
✱ Look at your pickee's 'read' shelf and see what genres they have recently read or read the most. Reviewing their ‘read’ shelf might help you in choosing something they are interested in reading right now.
✱ If your pickee reads lots of books in a genre you are not familiar with (erotic romance, GLBT, YA, etc.) Contact the Mods or the month's organizer for guidance.
✱ Include a variety of books (e.g., shorter page count, new addition to their 'to-read' shelf, an older book on their 'to-read' shelf) This variety gives your pickee options when choosing the book or books they will be reading this month. Use the sort feature within their shelves to determine date a book was added, published or read; page numbers, ratings, etc.

MAY PICKING RULES
Usually Fall is my favorite time of year and sunflowers are my favorite flower of all. For some reason though, Spring has really appealed to me this year. Maybe it has to do with being in lockdown for a year, or maybe it’s just after all the ugliness we’ve seen the last year, that a little beauty is needed. Whatever the reason, I’ve really looked forward to Spring this year especially. And maybe I'm crazy, but I feel like the flowers blooming are on some kind of competition with each other for who can be the prettiest! Recently, I took my kids to a local garden and absolutely enjoyed the whole experience! We saw tons of blooming flowers, including cherry blossoms, camellias, tulips, lilacs, roses, lilies and daffodils. It was beautiful!
The age-old saying “April showers bring May flowers” is so very accurate as more than 50 different species of flowers make their appearance in and around the month of May. What was really fun was seeing how many of these listed below were your favorites!
Let’s celebrate some of them!
*NOTE: As an added bonus option, you can replace any of the recommendations with a book that features that flower on the cover, in the title, author’s name or in the story. For example: the book “Peony in Love” by Lisa See would work for Category 1; a book by the author Poppy Brite would work for Category 3; or the book “Island Affair” by Priscilla Oliveras would work for Category 2 because there are Birds of Paradise on the cover.*

1) Peony (Species: Paeonia officinalis)
– Peonies are a favorite of weddings and celebrations though they have a relatively short blooming season, usually only 7-10 days. Their bountiful large blooms are native to Asia, Western North America and Southern Europe and are most commonly found in pastel colors of pinks, creams, yellows and lavenders, though they also can bloom in deep purples, reds and even black. Many Asian cultures utilized the peony’s petals and roots in medicines and teas. The peony stands for romance, prosperity, happy marriage, and compassion.
Recommend a book: with a celebration or happy event in the story (your interpretation); set in Asia or with an Asian character or author; or is a short story or novella.
2) Bird of Paradise (Species: Strelitzia Reginae)
– Native to South Africa, and commonly known as the crane flower, this unique-looking flower stands above its green fan-shaped crown of foliage, produces no windborne pollen and has an allergy rating of 1, which is considered “allergy-fighting”. Their unusual size and dramatic design are easily recognizable and their petals consist of three brilliant orange sepals and three purplish-blue or white petals. Other varieties produce creamy white and purplish-blue petals. The bird of paradise represents faithfulness, love and thoughtfulness. In Hawaii, where the bird of paradise grows wild and is a significant part of Hawaiian culture, its Hawaiian name means “Little Globe”.
Recommend a book: with an orange cover; a character who is a ‘fighter’ (your interpretation) or with a bird in the story or on the cover.
3) Poppy (Family: Papaveraceae)
- The brightly- colored and happy-looking Poppy is actually a symbol of peace, sleep and death. The red poppy also became the symbol for remembrance of soldiers who have died during wartime, originating after the trench warfare in the poppy fields of Flanders, Belgium during World War 1. ”Sleep” references the opium poppy, or papaver somniferum, which is widely cultivated and its worldwide production is monitored by international agencies. It is used for production of dried latex and opium, the principal precursor of narcotic opiates such as morphine, heroine and codeine. Poppy seeds contain small quantities of both morphine and codeine. Even ancient Egyptian doctors would have their patients eat the seeds from a poppy to relieve pain. Poppies come in a wide variety of colors, most commonly yellow, orange, white or red.
Recommend a book: with a character who is or was in the military; a character who is sick, gets injured or in pain; or with a red cover.
4) Pansy (Genus: Viola)
– A hybrid of the violet, the name “pansy” is derived from the French word pensée, or “thought”, and was imported in the Late Middle English as a name of Viola since the flower was regarded as a symbol of remembrance. In Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Ophelia distributes flowers with the remark, “There’s pansies, that’s for thoughts.” The pansy species Viola tricolor, which consists of (you guessed it) three differently-colored petals, is commonly seen as a wildflower in Europe and western Asia and known as heartsease or “heart’s ease”. A cheery garden flower, the pansy is distinguished by its two overlapping upper petals, two side petals and a single bottom petal with a slight beard emanating from the flower’s center. These petals are usually white or yellow, purplish or blue, but have since been cultivated into a variety of colors.
Recommend a book: where the character remembers something or thinks about something; with a beard or facial hair on the cover; or that is part of a series.
5) Lilac (Species: Syringa vulgaris)
- The highly fragrant lilacs are actually a member of the family called Oleaceae, which includes olives, forsythia and jasmine, all of which are considered highly odoriferous (they have a strong fragrance). Lilacs are native to the Balkan Peninsula where they grow in shrubs or small trees on rocky hills up to 10 feet tall. Lilacs are typically a harbinger of spring, the timing of their bloom indicating whether spring will be early or late. Colors are primarily lilac as well as blue or magenta and sometimes white and are arranged in dense, terminal panicles. The lilac-colored lilacs represent the first emotions of love while the white lilac represents purity and innocence; the magenta color represents love and passion and the blue-colored lilacs represent happiness and tranquility.
Recommend a book: with an innocent character (your interpretation); with a story that features a group of friends; or features a purple or blue cover.
6) Magnolia (Family: Magnoliaceae)
- “Pretty as a Magnolia in May” as the Southern phrase goes, the Magnolia is among the toughest flower around, able to withstand great cold and strong heat. Unsurprising since specimens of its ancestors have been found dating to 20 million years ago, as well as plants identifiably belonging to the Magnoliaceae family dating to 95 million years ago! The natural range of the Magnolia species centers in east and southeast Asia, followed by North and Central America and the West Indies. Some species are even found in South America and the flowers of many species are considered edible. Magnolias symbolize dignity and nobility. In ancient China, magnolias were thought to be the perfect symbols of womanly beauty and gentleness.
Recommend a book: that was originally published more than 20 years ago; has a female MC; or is tagged historical.
7) Sweet Pea (Genus: Lathyrus)
- The Sweet Pea, (in the legumes family) are originally native to Sicily, southern Italy and the Aegean Islands. Of the wild sweet pea plants, the flowers are purple, but in broad, they vary widely in color and are strongly scented. Scottish nurseryman Henry Eckford cross-bred and developed the sweet pea, turning it from an insignificant, sweetly-scented flower into a floral sensation in the late Victorian era. In 1888, he set up his development and trial fields of sweet peas in Wem in Shropshire and was awarded the RHS Victoria Medal of Honor for his work. While Eckford’s cultivators of the sweet pea bloom in late Spring and early Summer, wild varieties generally appear earlier in Spring. The sweet pea is a symbol of blissful pleasure, due to its lush, bright blossoms. It is also a flower associated with greetings and common kindness. This flower makes a great farewell gift, expressing best wishes as a loved one sets off on a journey.
Recommmend a book: set in the UK or Italy; featuring a character or author who is given an award; or has the words ‘sweet’ or ‘wild’ in the title, series or description.
8) Orchid (Family: Orchidaceae)
- The orchid family, along with the Asteraceae family, are the two largest families of flowering plants. The Orchidaceae family have over 28,000 accepted species, nearly equal to the number of bony fishes, more than twice the number of bird species and about four times the number of mammal species! They are found all over the world, excepting the Artic regions. The species of vanilla orchid, native to Mexico and Belize, is one of the primary sources of vanilla flavoring, due to its high content of vanillin, and is considered endangered on the conservation list. Due to their namesake and unique ”suggestive” appearance, orchids are associated with fertility, virility and sexuality and have been long associated with love and elegance throughout various cultures and time periods. According to Feng Shui, orchids have the unique ability to bring good luck and fortune in love.
Recommend a book: with a character that is part of a large family; has an erotic or paranormal tag; or has a 2 and 8 in the page count or publication date.
I'll start! I think my favorite spring flower is the lilac. Their scent is intoxicating and they're so cheerful!

What is the Pick-It-For-Me Challenge?
The Pick-It-For-Me Challenge (PIFM) is a reading challenge where each participant gives and receives book recommendations based on a given a set of rules. The assignment method and book selection rules change each month so it’s always new and always different.
The idea of the PIFM challenge is that you will get new-to-you books and authors selected for you as well as a push to read some books that have been lingering on your shelves. You may not be interested in the new books recommended, which is why you also get a minimum of four books from your shelf.
You only have to read ONE book to complete this challenge!
After signups are closed, your names and any extra info will go into the super-secret PIFM randomizer and it will select someone for you to recommend books to and someone to give you recommendations. This list will be posted along with any specific picking rules for the month.
In order to participate you need to either HAVE YOUR PROFILE SET TO PUBLIC (preferable), or friend the person giving you recommendations.
PLEASE NOTE: if you choose to keep your profile private, it is your responsibility to send a friend request to the person picking for you as soon as possible after the matchups are posted. Whether your profile is private or not, it is also very important that your profile be set to receive Private Messages (PMs) in case anyone needs to reach out to you (mods, organizer etc.)
Everything gets done in this thread so be sure to come back often!!!
Repicks:
You can ask for repicks if:
✱ The books picked for you are not yet released.
✱ If you have already read the chosen book(s) and they are on your ‘read’ shelf.
✱ If you did not receive four picks from your ‘to-read’ shelf, with at least one from your preferred shelf.
You may NOT ask for repicks because:
✱ A book is not available at your library.
✱ A genre or author you don’t enjoy.
