Hadrian's Wall Path
The Path Continues6. Aesica
The Aesica fort was built slightly south of Hadrian's Wall to guard the Caw Gap. The most interesting aspect is that the fort received its water supply through an aqueduct. I think we can safely say that the aqueducts are the best known monuments of the Roman Empire - at least visually, thanks to their imposing arches. These are truly remarkable engineering works and few people know that even now, Rome partly uses the ancient aqueducts to supply water, in particular the one called Aqua Marcia. In the Renaissance and modern times Roman-inspired aqueducts were even built in the city to feed their fountains.
✱ Read a book with water on the cover (post cover) OR
✱ Read a book where construction works take place (briefly explain what happens) OR
✱ Read a book whose MC's first name begins with a letter in AESICA
7. Magnis
Magnis Fort was built near the intersection of two roads. It is not physically attached to Hadrian's Wall and only a few ruins remain today. The main point of interest is the Roman Army Museum, which was reopened in 2011 after a refurbishment. The museum shows what life was like in the northernmost part of the empire, especially for the soldiers who were stationed here. They were auxiliaries, that is, people who were not Roman citizens. They obtained citizenship at the end of their service as well as a sum of money or a piece of land to cultivate in the new colonies. In general, veterans always enjoyed a certain prestige in the Roman world.
✱ Read a book whose MC is a soldier or a veteran OR
✱ Read a book published after 2011 (share publication date) OR
✱ Read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in ROMAN ARMY MUSEUM (three word minimum).
8. Carlisle
During our journey we pass through the city of Carlisle, although the original Roman site was located further south than Hadrian's Wall proper. The city was founded in the 9th century BC by the legendary British King Leil, and in Roman times, it became one of the support bases for the wall with the name of Luguvalium. During the Middle Ages it played a fundamental role during the disputes between England and Scotland, so much so that in 1093 the construction of a castle was begun in the same place where the Roman fort stood. The castle and the cathedral, dating back to the 12th century, are the two most important monuments of the city.
✱ Read a series #9 book OR
✱ Read a book set in Ancient Times or in the Middle Ages (before 1492) OR
✱ Read a book with a personal name (i.e John, Mary, etc) in the title or in the series name (in the latter case share the name of the series).
9. Maia
Maia was the westernmost fort along the wall and was located atop a cliff on the Solway Firth. It was also the second largest fort after that of Uxelodunum. Unfortunately, the northern part of the fort collapsed a long time ago due to cliff erosion. Outside the fort, as often happened, there was also a vicus, or cluster of houses, that did not enjoy the rights possessed by the larger localities. Often from these vici, current communities were derived. The remains of Maia, in fact, are now found in Bowness-on-Solway.
✱ Read a book with a cliff in the cover (post the cover) OR
✱ Read a book set in a small village OR
✱ Read a book where all the letters of the word MAIA are found in the title (in any order).
10. Hadrian's Coast
The plans of Emperor Hadrian were to continue the line of fortifications along the west coast with a wooden palisade that united various turrets and small forts. You can get an idea of the route by taking the Cumbria Coastal Way from Bowness-on-Solway to Maryport. On the edge of the latter locality, you can admire the remains of the fort of Alauna, which means "the shining moon". In Maryport itself, you can see a beautiful exhibition of Roman artifacts at the Senhouse Museum. The collection of altars are especially of interest.
✱ Read a book where the characters take a walk OR
✱ Read a book whose MC's name begins with a letter in ALAUNA OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first and last initials are found in HADRIAN'S COAST.

Four Months from Start
Inspired by our Roman Empire challenge, Patrizia has a new trail for us to explore!
The History:
✱ Hadrian's Wall, or Vallum Hadriani in Latin, was an imposing fortification built in Britain by Emperor Hadrian in 122 AD to defend the territory from the tribes who inhabited present-day Scotland.
✱ It consisted of a moat armed with pointed wooden poles, the actual stone wall, a road for military use and finally, the vallum - two large embankments with a moat in the middle. Milecastles or small forts with two turrets were built at intervals of one Roman mile. Every five miles there was a larger fort built to supply the soldiers who were guards in the fortifications.
✱ The wall was 117 km (73 miles) long and ran from Segedunum (now Wallsend) on the River Tyne to the coast of the Solway Firth. After the fall of the Roman Empire it fell into disuse and many of its stones were used to build houses and other buildings. Since the 19th century it has been rediscovered, becoming an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
✱ Few people know that in 142 AD the emperor Antoninus Pius had another, simpler wall built (it consisted of an embankment and a wooden palisade), in present-day Scotland, between the Firth of Clyde and the Firth of Forth, but it was abandoned after only twenty years.
The Path:
✱ As early as the 19th century, people started walking along the wall, but the actual trail was officially opened in May 2003. It is 135 km (84 miles) long and can be walked safely in about ten days, in both directions.
✱ As is often the case in Europe, a walker's passport is available where you can affix stamps available at certain locations - a great souvenir of your trip.
✱ From April to October there is a bus, appropriately named AD122, which covers a large part of the wall, stopping at the most important locations. This is an excellent alternative, together with other local means of transport, in case of need or for those who, despite not being walkers, want to tackle this journey.
The Challenge:
Complete 10 tasks (one from each section).
To make the challenge a little harder you can choose to do the tasks in order.
Challenge Rules: All forms of books are accepted as long as they are 100 pages or more. When posting updates of completed books, please include a link to the title and author’s name, along with the date you finished reading the book. Please post cover if it is task appropriate. When you have completed the challenge, please copy and paste your entire challenge and repost in a new message, letting us know it is completed.

Enjoy the path!
1. Segedunum and Arbeia
The first fort along the wall to the east is Segedunum, but it may be interesting to start the journey from Arbeia, the fort located on the Tyne that served as a supply point for the entire wall. Both forts, which are located near Newcastle, are museum locations and have reconstructions of typical buildings such as the thermal baths in Segedunum and a gate in Arbeia. The museum of Segedunum is absolutely worth visiting for the various finds preserved there. You will learn that the castrum was the typical rectangular-shaped Roman camp and that, when it was permanent, it involved the construction of masonry works. Since the Middle Ages the word has been used to indicate a fortified place - hence the English word "castle" is derived.
✱ Read a book with the number 2 in its total page count (share page count) OR
✱ Read a book that mentions the word "castle" or "camp" in the text (share text) OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first and last initials are found in SEGEDUNUM.
2. Vindobala
In the vicinity of our next fort, Vindobala, the remains of a temple dedicated to Mithras was found, including the three altars pictured above. The Romans were polytheists and often incorporated among their gods, those worshiped by the subjected populations. Mithras was a god of Persian origin. His cult was purely male and was widespread among the military, especially among officers. The followers met in underground temples known as mithraea; these were usually natural cavities or very modest places built inside or under existing buildings. Finally, typical of this cult were the communal ritual banquets, based on one of the iconic scenes of Mithras sharing a banquet with the god Sol.
✱ Read a book in which the characters partake of an important meal or banquet OR
✱ Read a book tagged RELIGION in its GR homepage OR
✱ Read a book with a title that starts with a letter in MITHRAS.
3. Corbridge
A small detour takes us to Corbridge, a small town whose main interest, at least during our trip, is the ruins found in its vicinity. They are those of Coria, the northernmost city of the entire Roman Empire. Its name is found in the so-called tablets of Vindobala, one of the most important artifacts found along Hadrian's Wall. These are wooden tablets that show documents and letters written between the 1st and 2nd centuries, thus offering a glimpse of life inside a Roman fort. The tablets are kept in the British Museum.
✱ Read a book set in a city (tell us where) OR
✱ Read the first or second book in a series OR
✱ Read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in TABLETS OF VINDOBALA (three word minimum).
4. Cilurnum
Cilurnum is the best preserved Roman fort in the region that was home to a cavalry department and has been a museum since 1903. The Roman cavalry was lightly armed and were used here to make retaliatory raids into the territory north of the wall. The fort also guarded a bridge over the River Tyne, of which some remains are visible. Other forts along the wall similarly guarded bridges, these being very delicate points along the fortification.
✱ Read a book with a bridge on the cover (post cover) OR
✱ Read a book where someone takes a ride on a horse (share text) OR
✱ Read a book with a title that starts with a letter in CILURNUM.
5. Brocolitia
A characteristic of the forts located along Hadrian's Wall was, in fact, that each of them were often guarded by non-Roman soldiers, but rather from a population allied to that Empire. Inscriptions found in a document called the Roman Inscriptions of Britain, allow us to see which barbarian populations had guarded a particular fort. There were 48 inscriptions for the auxiliary fort called Brocolitia. The remains of three sanctuaries were found here, including a mithraeum (proof of the following this cult had among the soldiers). Note that until last year this fort was privately owned, but now it belongs to Historic England and is administered by English Heritage. The latter governs most of
the remains along the Wall.
