I live in the Southeast but most of the native people who lived here were forced to leave, maybe that's why it's so short?

Just caught up over the weekend! It is a short section and I think you are right about why it's short.

This poem stuck with me:

Combing
A simple act
preparing hair.
Something women do for each other
plaiting the generations.
