I've been waiting for this meeting between father and son, and Nyphron pretty much reacted exactly as I've expected. I loved what he said about Persephone.. yes, I believe that he wasn't requested by Malcolm to name the city after her.
I loved this chapter - maybe the best of the book - because there is no black and white, no absolute right and wrong. Both sides have good reasons and good arguments, and it shows again that each action could be totally differently judged depending on the angle you are looking at it from.
I love this chapter. Even though this father and son have an 800 year old relationship, Nolyn is still very much a "young adult", without the experience of his own wife and child to understand and temper his judgment of his father (for all intents and purposes), unable to see him as someone who was doing the best he could given the circumstances, not hurting anyone's feelings on purpose, which is pretty much the gist of both parenting and marriage. And his father assumed his son would "enjoy" the experiences of his youth without asking first. There are always two sides of a story, and each has only seen their own, assuming they were right and not making an effort to communicate to clarity after all this time. It's almost amusing if I didn't feel so bad for both of them for being so misunderstood. And I'm so glad to see Malcolm mentioned! I keep wondering when he'll pop up!
This chapter is surprising! From Nolyn's perspective, surprising that he waited so long to communicate with his father and then kept choosing to remain angry even with Nyphron's assurances that he was not trying to kill him. Sadly, harboring grudges for so long made Nolyn believe outsiders over his own father. I was hoping for a different or better outcome between the two.
