What would you do if you found the world was going to be uninhabitable in around two years? Seveneves answers those questions. The moon has exploded into different pieces and will soon rain down on Earth for thousands of years. The human race is scrambling to build upon an existing space station, while each country decides which two of them will be chosen to live out the remainder of their lives on it. Expendable people are sent to work on the space station and expand it as much as possible, while on Earth, politicians have differing views on how things should and shouldn’t proceed. Once the cataclysmic event, known as the Hard Rain, begins, those on the space station and expanded pods, struggle to exist, with different factions that believe only they know what to do to survive their journey. After thievery, sacrifice, separation of the factions, murder, and a little bit of cannibalism, seven women of reproductive age are all that have made it to the space stations final destination in the pocket of the largest moon piece. Using genetics, they are able to create 7 distinct races that have carried on the views of their mothers and separated their society into Red and Blue factions. 5,000 years have past and Earth is being reTerraformed to support life. The final scramble between the two factions begin when they realize that some humans managed to survive the Hard Rain. Overall a very good read.
