Joy (audioaddict1234) Started yesterday. I had started this book before. Read the book that preceded it several years ago (not necessary) but just didn’t get into this one. But I’m enjoying the story now.

Joy (audioaddict1234) Finished this. It was interesting to me the depth of character shown here. Bas was a person who, at first glance, I probably wouldn’t have liked in real life, but he turned out to have facets of his personality that I really did like. It was hard to reconcile but also a reminder not to judge too harshly nor too quickly.

Hannah | 38 comments I agree Joy, Bas was really unexpected in depth I think. I loved this book and how obviously flawed the characters were but in a realistic (within the fantastical setting) way. I also thought it was really unique (despite some of the reviews I've seen saying Rowell copied certain tropes of fantasy, which is ridiculous because almost all fantasy is modeled around specific tropes).

Joy (audioaddict1234) Hannah—that is also what my daughter said. I would say something like, “Was Eb supposed to be similar to Hagrid,” and she’d say, “Maybe but a lot of wizarding books have a similar character.” For me, bc HP is nearly all I’ve read that is similar, the book seemed “like HP”. But also NOT like HP in important ways.
