Could it be The Unseen by Janet Lunn? It's a collection of canadian short stories for kids that are all spooky/weird. I feel like I remember an ant story.
I'm not familiar with any of the other stories, but I remember an ant farm story like that called The Gift by RC Welch. It was included in: Scary Stories for Sleep-Overs
