STEM = Science Technology Engineering Mathematics

In this group — in the cozy genre in general — the majority of books we read tend to fit certain themes. Culinary, bookish, craft and garden themed books especially abound. There are, however, numerous books that feature characters outside this “norm”— books that feature mathematicians, scientists, doctors and nurses, computer techs and engineers. My challenge to you is to find one of these more “unusual” characters this month.

This challenge may, at first glance, seem incredibly hard to some. On the other hand, those who read across genres may instantly light upon a book in Mount TBR that would qualify. In fact, as I sit here writing this, I can think of at least half a dozen non-cozies on my shelf that would fit, but I also have just as many cozy series that also qualify. Here are some examples from my own shelves.

COZY:
* Donna Andrews — Turing Hopper (computers/AI)
* Aaron Elkins — Gideon Oliver (forensic anthropologist)
* Ada Madison — Sophie Knowles (math professor)
* Camille Minichino — Periodic Table series
* Elizabeth Peters — Amelia Peabody series (archaeology)
* Annelise Ryan — Mattie Winston (nurse/coroner)

MYSTERY:
* Sarah Andrews — Em Hanson (geologist)
* Jefferson Bass — Dr. Bill Brockton
* Tess Gerritsen — Rizzoli and Isles (medical examiner) & nonseries medical themed suspense
* Kathy Reichs — Temperance Brennon

NON-FICTION:
* Fly Girls: How Five Daring Women Defied All Odds and Made Aviation History
* Hidden Figures
* The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America's Shining Women

I can recommend a couple other series. Both are by Julie Moffett and feature computer geeks, with a female MC in both: 1) Lexi Carmichael and 2) White Knights (high school student but the book is suitable for all). I've finished Lexi series (until the next one) and two of the Knights.

Congrats, Patrizia! The way Olympic coverage is done here, I can usually mute the TV and do some reading during events I don’t like — not to mention commercials. Harder during gymnastics, but there’s also enough pause during some events (like swimming and diving) to read a few paragraphs, too.

Patrizia | 334 comments I don't know about you, but I will have to fight the time zone ... Let's add the mornings (which are Japan afternoons) that I will be at work and I will not see much, I'm afraid ... I think that while I watch what will be on television I will stay at the computer doing my usual checks on the sites I follow daily. Starting with Goodreads ... LOL

Japan is 13 hours ahead of New York (14 ahead of me), so a lot of our coverage is taped while we’re sleeping and then shown in the afternoon or “prime time” (7-10 pm in my time zone). Some events may be shown live late at night for the night owls and insomniacs, but most of it is recorded.
