The Procrastinators Book Club discussion

Welcome to the If I Was Your Girl Buddy Read Discussion thread! This thread officially opens on July 1sth and anyone can join at any time. Please keep in mind that spoilers are allowed in this thread but only up to the group's current reading place. Do not spoil the book if you've read further than the group. Any extra days can be used to catch up!

Each day we will be reading by chapters or page numbers. Page numbers are an approximation based on the hardcover or paperback that is the default on Goodreads. The suggested Buddy Read discussion schedule is as follows:

Week of 07/01
July 1: Chapters 1-8
July 2: Chapters 9-16
July 3: Chapters 17-24
July 4: Chapters 25-33

Chapters 1 - 8

So... overall I like this. I am a little iffy on how quick she went from not feeling like Grant and Parker would understand her transition to kissing Grant. Of the two, at least he has experience with the LGBTQ+ challenges with his friend who I am assuming committed suicide but not confirmed so we'll see there. (hide spoiler)]

Ok so I kinda already finished the book. Some chapter 1-8 thoughts: It it a lot heavier than I expected it to be. I was losing my shit for a few chapters there because I thought it was only Parker that had a crush on her and so I kept confusing him and Grant until I finally realized that they both had a crush on her. But yeah I agree she kinda threw caution to the wind pretty fast there.

further thoughts on the book, these are probably not in order:
(view spoiler)[ When Bee went up on the stage, like that exact second I knew she was gonna do some dumb shit exactly like she did.

So it was horrible of me to laugh but when Amanda was outed and her and Grant were talking and he was like "do you have a penis?" and just the way she replies "I think you would have noticed" made me laugh way harder than it should have.

I thought Amanda and Grant were actually really cute together and I was hoping they would still be together if she came out to him but I wasn't expecting it to go nearly as well as it did at the end.

That one line by her mom that was like "Andrew was going to die one way or another, at least this way I got a daughter." or something close to that just made me feel soooo much (hide spoiler)]

Chapters 9 - 16
(view spoiler)[So now there is this whole other element added with religion. I feel for Amanda. She is having to deal with embracing who she is, a new school/town, and now being surrounded by very... closed minded people.
"Maybe secrets and lies were a part of life; maybe everyone had something they were lying to themselves about, or something they were hiding." I completely agree with this TBH.
Hmm... I wonder why the hot and cold with Grant? Okay so we learn a bit more about him so it makes a bit more sense.
I am really worried about Amanda. I can almost predict her secret is going to come out and something really bad is going to happen and I don't want it to. (hide spoiler)]

No worries! I'll probably read a bit faster to finish sooner since my copy is due soon since you're already done. I'm not going to read your further thoughts until I finish, but am looking forward to discussing it still!

Okay so I finished this last night. Random thoughts (also probably not in order lol)
(view spoiler)[I had such high hopes for Bee and was a bit let down of how she ended up acting out.
I just KNEW Parker was bad news!
I appreciate that her group of friends were welcoming when she went back.
This whole time I've been wondering about this school. Wouldn't the school know that a teacher hadn't been showing up? Or is this teacher seriously only in charge of 1 class with only 2 students? That is so unrealistic. lol Also wouldn't the school know about her transition and do what they could to make it more comfortable if she had to go to gym class or whatever? (hide spoiler)]

Yeah idk how nobody at that school noticed. I second that it definitely didn't make sense. Unless the teacher was submitting fake grades/attendance which is like way too much effort so how did nobody notice until like a quarter of the year? What was that school's administration on???
