Jan | 784 comments The Almighty Tor.com has announced the LeVar Burton Reads" Writing Contest .

"Tor.com is thrilled to be in collaboration with FIYAH Literary Magazine and the LeVar Burton Reads podcast for a writing contest! If you write science fiction, fantasy, or horror, this is your chance to get your work in front of LeVar Burton, legendary Reading Rainbow host, actor, podcaster, and all around excellent human. One winning story will be featured in Season 10 of LeVar Burton Reads."

The contest’s theme is "Origins & Encounters" and “welcomes works of the Indigenous fantastic, the other-worldly, and alternative histories,” and suggests in the guidelines that writers might consider how blended civilizations and cultural exchanges would affect for example gods, faiths, religious traditions, food traditions, language, gender recognition, concepts of community, concepts of identity, and race prejudice (human vs. other species)

More details can be found on the contest webpage

Anyone here thinking about participating?

That's a bit of a ****** for those of us in UK!

Jan | 784 comments Yeah, that's a real bummer for me as well! 😔

Sembazuru | 29 comments Hey, much better announcement than my brief mention 5 days ago: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

I'm not an author, so unfortunately I'll have to join those of you who are geographically exempt from submitting on the side lines. ;-) X-D

Given that most folk in the UK probably only know him as ‘that guy from Star Trek’, if they know him at all, it doesn’t sound unfair to me. I have no ‘reading rainbow’ nostalgia; I only heard of it through this group. Plenty of writing competitions in the world - I don’t need them all to be for me.

If anyone in the group enters, I wish you the best of luck! :D

Well, if you want to catch up on his current activities (and have time in your life for another podcast), check out his LeVar Burton Reads podcast in your favorite podcast player/service. He has a really good reading voice.

If you are having trouble finding it in your service, here is the link to the Stitcher home of the podcast. You don't have to use Stitcher if you don't already. I was able to find it in PocketCasts, I would imagine the other big podcast players have similar cross-polination.

Ruth (tilltab) Ashworth | 2218 comments Thanks. I am confident it is great, but I have a large minus number of listening time for podcasts. I used to work in a company printing mugs, and since that didn't require much active thinking I had a huge number of podcasts I listened to at work. Ever since that company went under, I've been slowly trimming the number of 'must listens' (I even had to drop some faves because I couldn't keep up with dailies anymore) but there are still a touch too many for me to get through, especially when I want to catch up on audiobooks!

Ah, there is so much content to consume! I wish I could send some back to my youth, for those days when there was nothing on the telly and I'd read all the books on the shelf!

Jan | 784 comments Does anyone know what happened to this contest? The contest page said winners were going to be announced in December 2021 but I have found no announcement or update...
