Jon Cocks | 7 comments I loved the 'Earth's Children' series, by Jean M Auel, until Ayla found her way back from the (modern day) Eurasian steppes to the painted caves of (modern) France. The sixth in the series was a bad let-down. 'The Clan of the Cave Bear', the first, was wonderful. The next three were rivetting. Those familiar with the series will recall how long a wait between books fans had to endure: 4 years for no 4, a whopping 11 years for Ayla's intro to upper paleolithic French living, then another long wait until the fizzle-out that was the final book.

message 20: by Rae (new)

Rae | 3 comments Some fantastic books mentioned, and others that are new to me! Have to support The Book Thief by Markus Zusak nominated by a few here, as well as Memoirs of a Geisha. I loved Captain Corelli's Mandolin by Louis de Bernieres; Love in the time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez; All the light we cannot see by Anthony Doerr; A tale of two cities by Charles Dickens, but surely no list could be complete without Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevsky?
