Sorry this didn't work for you. I think I would have felt the same except that the audio version somehow made things interesting for me. But kudos to you for hanging in there and finishing!
Thanks Robin-it was the word rake that made me do it...I would have had my 1st month of no tag book and no pursue it word...that did not sit well with me. LoL
Congratulations, on finishing, Joanne! I have this on my tbr, but your experience doesn't encourage me to move it up.
Reminds me of how I felt after reading Moby-Dick or, the Whale back in summer of 1973....did we really have to read xx pages about blubber? I always say that I should have stopped after Ishmael meets Queequeg because it was downhill from there. Put me off tunafish sandwiches for years. You at least got 'rake' out of this. Cudos for finishing!

I couldn't finish this one. It's still on my list, with me thinking to give it another try someday, but if I'm being honest, I'm not so sure that day would come. Especially after your review.

I know others loved it, and I am betting some of the later books in the series are better, but this one put me on "nope, not going there" list.

Both stars are for the quality of writing. It took everything this queen of DNF had in her, not to throw this one back. Yes, I understand it is a classic. What I did not understand was why we had to spend 165 pages learning everything and anything about ships and sailing in this time period. Really? I doubt anyone who new nothing about those things would have ever picked this book up. Last year I read Mr. Midshipman Hornblower and Lieutenant Hornblower, I liked them both I was really expecting this book to be more like them.
It pained me to finish it, and the only reason I did was it was too late to find something else for the July Tag and it also had Rake in the text.
